We have already made our reservations and plan to visit 5 national parks this year. I'm drinking Dos Equis instead of Corona.Re: Northland TT's?Northland was an Idaho builder of truck campers that branched out to building small travel trailers. I understand that at some point, Northland stopped building truck campers to focus on the travel trailers. Pacific Coach purchased the company, but it appears that the Northand name is history and Northland trailers are "orphans". Perhaps Pacific Coach has re-branded the Northland product. Rugged Mountain RV in Idaho has taken over building truck campers which are sold factory direct. Tacoma RV has opened a new enlarged service center that is larger than anything I have seen at other dealerships. Have heard great things about Apache Camping Center, the Arctic Fox dealer. We purchased our previous trailer from Apache and were pleased with their service. While Grand Design fifth wheels get positive reviews, the GD dealer (across I-5 from Tacoma RV) gets poor reviews. I figure that regardless of the brand, stuff breaks and it's important to have a dealership with a good service center or have a good independent RV tech available.Montana vs. Arctic Fox vs. Grand DesignMy wife and I currently own a Cougar TT that has served us well for weekend camping trips and week-long road trips. As we get closer to retirement, we are looking at fifth wheels for extended road trips. Looking ahead to our next RV (a fifth wheel) we have narrowed down our search to 3 brands: Montana, Arctic Fox, and Grand Design. The Montana Dealer in our area has a good reputation (also the same dealer where we purchased our Cougar). The Arctic Fox dealer in our area has a stellar reputation. The Grand Design dealer in our area has a so-so reputation. At the risk of starting the Ram/Ford/Chevy debate, I would appreciate the perspective of current owners of these three brands. Has the quality of Arctic Fox gone downhill with the passing of Ron Nash? Has the quality of Grand Design gone downhill since they have been acquired by Winnebago? Should I put the quality of the dealership ahead of the quality of the fifth wheel?Europe Tour with a Class B. Buy or Rent?My wife and I are talking about taking off 6 to 12 months to travel around Europe. We are serious campers here in the US and thought it would be great to tour Europe in a Class B. Here are some options we are considering: 1. Rent a Class B in Europe 2. Buy a Class B in Europe, then sell it in Europe at the end of our journey. 3. Buy a Class B in Europe, then at the end of the journey, have it shipped to the US. Any thoughts on these options? Thanks!Re: Beginning Mods To My New Arctic Fox 27-5LIf I may ask, what dealer did you go to for the purchase of your Arctic Fox? My only concern with the 27-5L is no dedicated space for a washer and dryer. I'm wondering if this could be an owner mod or if the factory could provide this mod on a special order?Shorter 5th WheelsAfter 3 years with a 28' TT for week long vacations, my wife and I are looking at a shorter 5th wheel for an upcoming 12-18 month road trip around the country. We would like to keep the trailer under 32' so we can fit into state and national park campgrounds. So far our short list the Arctic Fox 27 5L, Arctic Fox 28 5C, and the Glacier Peak F26 RKS. With the other brands we have looked at (Cougar, Montana) it appears that their shortest models start in the 35' range and go up to 41'. We are looking for a well-constructed unit (no "lite" models). Will be purchasing a 1 ton diesel/single rear wheel for towing. Any recommendations for brands and models that would meet our criteria?Re: Keystone quality ?We have a Keystone Cougar and have been pleased with the quality. After one year and over 5,000 miles, our only problem has been a cabinet handle coming off. Prior to purchasing, researched multiple brands. I came to the conclusion that a good dealer with a good service department is part of the equation. The next rig will be a Montana, Grand Design Reflection, or an Arctic Fox.Too Many Choices? The Keystone, Jayco, and Winnebago websites do a good job of differentiating between their their entry level, mid level, and upper level fifth wheels. I look at the Forest River website and see 21 different brands of fifth wheels. What are the differences with Forest River's fifth wheel choices? 21 brands from one manufacturer seems a bit excessive. Is this like the old days at GM where the same car would be badged as a Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac with minor differences in trim and finish?Re: Quality of Lance Trailers? We seriously considered a Lance Trailer, but ended up purchasing a Cougar trailer instead. I'm impressed with the Lance fit and finish, but found a few items to be "deal breakers" 1. Small shower with a curtain rather than a shower door. 2. Flat roof 3. Raised floor for the dinette slide-out. 4. Minimal storage in the galley. Every brand has it's features, benefits, and shortcomings, so shop carefully.
