Is it too heavy/awkward to just straighten things out, pull the hitch pin and throw the whole assembly in the bed?Re: Weight dist. hitch---How much Hassel? Hannibal wrote: http://www.forestriverinc.com/travel-trailers/rockwood-mini-lite One of these little guys? Yes. Can't make up our mind if we want bunks or not, but still close enough spec wise I think. I wondered about the need for the WD hitch, but most on here seem adamant you might die without. Plan is to drive whatever I buy for awhile, then decide what I think. I'll end up deciding with caution I'm sure but may want to experience some shake and sway first.Re: Weight dist. hitch---How much Hassel?I'm starting to lean toward a TT vs. class C. Price and limited availability of ~25' C's, along with feeling more comfortable about hauling a TT after reading this forum, has me thinking in that direction. Couple more weeks should allow a decision. Before I get too far down the path, how about some comments on specs to make sure I'm reasonably in the ball park with my existing TV and potential trailer choices: TV 2003 F150 5.4L 3.73 80k mi runs perfect Tow rated 7100# GVWR 6750 GCVW 12,500 Trailer choices 25' Rockwood Mini Lites UVW ~ 4700 CCC ~1425 = GVWR ~6125 So 6125gvwr + 6750gvwr = 12875gcwr or 375# over spec if maxed out I realize this is hypothetical without weighing everything, but am I close to being "safe"? I plan on an Equalizer WDH or similar.Re: Weight dist. hitch---How much Hassel? TurnThePage wrote: Since you mentioned the Equal-I-zer brand specifically, I'll share what I do. I do not remove the hitch from the truck after un-hitching, and I do NOT remove the wd bars from the hitch either. I simply push them forward toward the truck bumper where they will stay put forever, or until I move them back to hitch up. I replaced the pins that secure those bars to the hitch with small padlocks. They won't get misplaced unless someone deliberately cuts the locks. It's a great system that way. Combined with an electric tongue jack, there's very little physical labor involved in hitching up. Don't suppose you have a picture of this with the bars attached. I'd like to see what the rear of your truck looks like with the entire hitch as mentioned.Re: Weight dist. hitch---How much Hassel? Thanks for all the great comments! Several things I hadn't thought of. I doubt we would haul a toad on a class C, but didn't realize a WD hitch might be needed if we did. I didn't think about leaving the hitch head attached to the truck and only having to store the bars. Packer Backer, why take pressure off the bars if still hooked up? Warp over time? Help with levelling or stablizing? rbpru, your comment "I cannot imagine comparing a TT to a Class C. Breaking camp every time we wanted to visit a tourist trap just would not work for us." What am I missing? Seems to me breaking camp w/a class C would be easier. OH LORDY...Why did you have to mention Quilt Shop!! Sound Guy, yup you got it, except for the expense. tinstartvlr, thanks for the Hitch Grip tip. I especially liked how much of their ad shows a woman easily installing the hitch head. As is probably obvious I have never towed a TT. Did tow a 5th wheel and found hooking up quite simple. I like the idea of a backup camera to get the ball aligned. Seems like hookups could be as easy as a 5W. If I go TT it will be towing with my existing 2003 lo mile F150 and we already have a 25' lite trailer in mind that easily meets the tow capacity. Issue in my mind was complexity and difficulty disconnecting to run around in the truck. I'm beginning to see it may be less cumbersome than I thought.Weight dist. hitch---How much Hassel?Been researching TT vs class C. For the sake of argument lets assume if I buy a trailer I will install an EQUALIZER 4 point hitch. Lets further assume that as I drive across America I will want to unhitch the truck every 3rd overnight stop at a campground and of course re-hitch for the next day's travel. Also need to secure the hitch in my truck bed, trailer or tie to a tree so it doesn't walk off while I'm not around. I'm 75. Am I soon going to get tired of wrestling the hitch on and off and wish I would have spent a little more and got a class C? I know there are other pros and cons to each option, but I have no knowledge of the effort required for the hitch process. We'll assume an electric tongue jack.Re: Just Grandma and Me---Does C make Sense? Thanks Donna. Looks like we're headed in the same direction but still doing some research. Off to look at a Monaco 26' today. They are very proud of it but we'll see!Re: Just Grandma and Me---Does C make Sense? One Dodge, rest Fords so far. I have always thought Chevy's rode more comfortably than Fords, BUT REAL MEN DRIVE FORDS :) But I hear ya and some mfg's offer both in certain models. Might be tough finding a dealer w/both to test drive.Re: Just Grandma and Me---Does C make Sense?Much good advice received and appreciated. Due to the limited availability of smaller C's in our price range around here we decided to forget price and simply check out 25-27' floor plans. After walk thru's of 8 vehicles we are starting to define some needs: Permanent bed (ideally rear twins or walk around queen) More available daylight inside the better No wet bath Slides nice but might not be required. Storage may be more important than we thought. Aside from that we discovered 2 completely unexpected results: A Ford E450/E350 chassis does not mean driver and passenger seats are always the same. One C was completely ruled out due to extreme lack of legroom for the driver due to "house" design. Crawling into the cockpit from both inside and outside became a routine check. There is such a thing as a mini-class A. 25-27'. https://www.thormotorcoach.com/axis/ Soon as it hits my $20M price point I'm all set to try it! The HUGE glass cockpit is something else! Anyone make an extendable rotating bug brush?Re: Just Grandma and Me---Does C make Sense? rockhillmanor wrote: You can scratch off the towing a pontoon boat on a trailer. It will be too heavy. Yeah saw the 2k hitch on one of them.
