While I do want the ability to run a 13.5K AC unit during some days, most often I won't need that since I typically go into the high country. Why not just invest in one EU2000i (or Companion if that's your preference) plus a MicroAir Easy Start Soft Starter Kit and pass on the second genset. You can always buy a second later should it prove necessary - unlikely judging by reports from those who've already done it. After a couple of really hot days and nights this summer, I'm giving in and getting the easy start and an EU2000i Companion. We've been very happy boondocking with our solar to recharge the house batteries but we really need to be able to run the AC once in a while. I figure I can find EU2000i's all day on craig's list if I need the second unit. But I am really hoping the single generator will do the trick and keep it quiet.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPLeon swapped with a scratch/dent norcold n611 in an hour & a half. Very fair price. It needed a little adjustment to the cabinet opening, so it's nice that I didn't have to figures that sort of stuff out myself. Leon and his son know what they are doing. We're back on the road to see our friends and the eclipse!Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAP Lwiddis wrote: Yup, follow your gut and check all systems two weeks in advance...1993 fridge? I HATE those 1993 RV fridges! Always quitting on you...25 years later. I know right? It was fine last trip three weeks ago so I wasn't as cautious as I normally am. I like the idea of a full swap instead of refurbishing this one, and I'll be happy if I only get 12 or 13 years from a newfangled fridge.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPAh - thanks Jim. Dave was pointing me at the 12V compressor fridges - not 3 way. I get the risk of using DC on the 3-way models. I'll consider 12v compressor technology for future because I do have a nice solar setup and good house batteries. For now though I am getting a new 2-way, plug & play pit stop very much on our planned route.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPLeon has a new Norcold N611 scratch & dent for $75 more than it would cost me to have him change the cooling unit on the 662. I'm going to go this option for now. It gives us all new parts, direct fit replacement, and half the time to change over than if I had him refurbish the 25 year old fridge. Any option to get this done later at home would certainly involve shipping costs and hassle. I doubt I'd get a similar price. And I'd be doing the job myself... I'm really liking the thought of a 12V compressor unit but that's going to have to be a long term plan for costs and energy calculations, sizing so I can apply the recommended insulation, etc. Again - I am really thankful that people spoke up with so many good ideas.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAP jerseyjim wrote: Dump the Norcold, get a Dometic elec/gas. Stay away from the 12V. My opinion...FWIW...and g'luck Can you elaborate- what makes you avoid the 12v option? And your preference of dometic over norcold?Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPI am really appreciating all the feedback. I feel like I'm talked off the ledge. While it's a bit disappointing to revert to ice and coolers this trip, I'm not going to let that get me down. In fact, my wife is already adapting plans and reminding me that it wasn't so long ago that we were packing coolers, etc. We can do this. As long as that ammonia dissipates! I like the idea that I take the opportunity to re-figure this part of the RV setup. We are rarely plugged in and want to fit with the solar rig we have (limited roof space, but we can have 470 watts and that's not too shabby). So maybe one of those 12V units will do the trick. I like the idea of less level sensitivity too.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPI think we may need to "rough it" a bit this trip and consider the options well. We mainly are off of shore power when we camp and don't have a generator. We do have 235 watt solar panel (and room for another), with a pair of T145 batteries for the house. Not sure how much power these residential units use.Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPSo I can have a cooler (ice packing for this trip) Disconnect the 120 and 12 volt sources. Will the ammonia be stable if I unplug power and just use as cooler? I'm kind of thinking - if it's possible to temporarily swap it with a dorm fridge for this trip. I'd have to plug the propane line to pull that off though. I'm also thinking this will be a way less than ideal fit even for a 1 week outing. I will call Bontranger like you're suggesting. Big thanks for quick replies - You all are great help!Re: Refrigerator replacement ASAPAnd this is a '93 Itasca Sunrise
