A friend of mine bought a new Jayco Class ‘A’ Motor Home in mid year 2020. Recently while on a trip the right front wheel bearings went out, and he came very close to a catastrophic accident as the tire was just second away from blowing while he was driving on the interstate. Vehicle only had 20,000 miles on it. He was about 60 miles form home when this happen. The Ford truck repair dealer closest to beak down refused to even look at the vehicle. It took him 26 hours to find a place to tow vehicle to have repairs done. So since the Motor Home is only 2 years old it should be under warranty. But here is the problem. Since Ford sold the chassis to Jaycee mid hear 2019 that is when the warranty started. Not when Motor Home was purchased. Cost to have repairs done was around $7.000. So Ford says they are not responsible as it is out of warranty. The Ford owners manual requires wheel bearing repack at every 60,000 miles. So this should fall under being a factory defect. It could only be one of three things caused the problem. Insufficient greasing at time of manufacturer, bearing was installed too tight, or a defective bearing. Which lays problem completely at Ford. I also wonder if this problem would apply to all Class A?Jacyo Crank problemI am working on a Jacyo Pop up camper, and the crank mechanism is acting strange. It cranks up fine. But when you go to lower it, it acts like it wants to skip or stick when you turn to crank down. Any suggestion or ideas on what may be causing the problem. Is it repairable or is a new crank mechanism needed? Thank youRe: Easy Automatic headlight modificationI believe it was many years ago that "Grey Hound" found out that by leaving bus headlights on in the day time they reduced their accidents about 10 percent. On dull hazy days certain vehicle colors like grey and med blues on a black top road will almost blend in and are hard to see. Canada has had a day time running light law for about 40+ years and I wish that the US had one too. On any vehicle that I have owned in the last 30 years, if they did not have daytime running lights I have added them. I figure the sooner someone sees me coming the less chance they will hit me.Re: Question about Suburban water heater w/ electric function. The Propane is a "Backup" for when the electric heater can not meet demand for hot water. This ensures that you should always have adequate hot water. If you do not have shore power, propane is the mode that you must use.Re: King pin weightA vehicle's GCWR is a specific weight determined by the manufacturer to be the maximum weight of a loaded tow vehicle and its attached loaded trailer. If that is the case, the combined weight of the truck and trailer is 18,240. Or almost 4,000 below what MFG recommends.Furnace control board replacmentAs some of you might recall while I was on vacation about 6 weeks ago, my furnace quit. After having posted the problem the number one reason was most likely the control board. Since we had an electric heater with us, we continued our trip and make out fine. When I got home I took the furnace out from below the stove and took it out of the enclosure. I had to disconnect the wires, but first marked which wire colors connected to each other. Note one blue wire for the thermostat had a white band on as it was thermostat wire specific. Remove out side air/exhaust. Remove front metal pane, then there is one screw at each lower corner that holds furnace down. But first I used a marker do a line at edge of rear of cabinet at wall, then front of cabinet at floor for future alignment. Had to pull furnace out a bit to disconnect gas line after gas was off. There is one screw at lower front center that holds cabinet to insides of furnace. I pulled furnace out of cabinet, then I turned it 90 deg to the cabinet and connected the gas line, (see photo note), used jumper wires for power, then contacted the two blue hemostat wires to try furnace. This where it gets interesting, I connected the two blue wires and it came on and it worked perfect. I could only conclude that either jarring from the trip or me taking furnace out allowed it to work. (Note I had door and windows open due to furnace exhaust) I decided to order a new board, but the I ended up with the wrong one. It was a universal board that was to big, and the furnace needs the small board that has the fan control wiring. This shuts off fan after about 10 minutes if it does not fire. I reordered the correct board and I have marked where the extra wires for the fan control go on picture. To get the board out, you have to take out the top screw of the fan housing (See picture) and the lower screw to get clearance to slide board out. You will notice I have indicated the location of a metal strip that holds the board in place. I had to remove it with a pliers in order to get it out. The new Dinosaur is a bit wider so metal strip was not necessary to re install. Put every thing back together and ran furnace for 15 minutes and it worked fine Re: What size rv cover? My 5th wheel is 27 feet of box plus a ladder too. I ordered the 27 foot cover and it fit fine. Plenty of slack to cover ladder plus spare tire. Would recommend that you get some swim noodles or semi rigid pipe insulation. I covered the ladder as the sharp corners of the outer edge of the ladder would have caused tears in the cover. Also used at sharp places like folding steps, corners and rear bumper ends. Don't forget to get wheel covers too, to protect tires, as cover will not reach all the way to ground. :)Re: Heating duct airflow improvementYes it is possible to redo your heat duct and vents. The difference between a 2"duct and a 4"duct is that the 4" has four times the inside area that a 2" has, and that is why your bath and bed area are cold. On a previous 5th wheel trailer that I had, there was 2" dia. duct in the step area aimed away from the sleeping area. Which I thought was quite dumb. I changed it to a 4" duct and located the outlet in the sleeping area for a big improvement. On my current 5thwheel they never put a heat and AC vent in the bathroom, so I added both to bath. With the way that MFG. do things in RV's, I wonder if any of the designers have eve used one.Re: Lead Landing Leg not workingThere are four possibilities of what the problem could be. There are two pins, one in the horizontal shaft bevel gear and the other for the bevel at the top of the screw rod and either one could break and cause the problem. Also the bevel gear on top of the screw shaft could be stripped. And lastly the thread block that the shaft turns in could be bad. This past summer I damaged the bevel gears on the follow jack and it made a loud thumping sound. I order a kit to replace the gears, but some how the screw shaft had a bigger hold dia. then the replacement. I tried everywhere I could think of calling both the trailer and frame manufacture and nobody could direct me to the right parts. Finally had to replace entire jack assembly to correct problem. I now have put a red line on near the top of the extension tube so I know when to stop retracting the legs. If you need more information on how to take the legs apart or replace them, send me s PMRe: Long Hauls - How often do you check fluids? As far as my policy, I Check fluids when ever I hit the road, even if I only went a few miles between stops. As far as checking the oil, either check it when it is cold, like in the morning. Or check it when it is hot and thin, as hot oil will drain into the pan very quickly. The worst time to check is if engine has only run a few minutes, as oil is cold and thick, and will not all drain down.
