It's been a wonderful summer even with the dog challenges.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"...... We saw many forms of cargo transportation ships carrying anything you can think of including a car and boat trailer. The recovery boats could be dropped in the water right at the spill location. I trained with the spill response team out of Seward, where I lived for 13 years. There is gear and boats in every major harbor around the Sound, on call year round. The logistics for moving gear and response teams is extensive. Not perfect, but they train every year and they study other spills across the globe to learn and improve strategy. The response organization is called SERVS. I used to ocean kayak in the Sound extensively, until the spill. In mid June I was impressed to see the ones in Seward were on cradles designed to fit on trucks or ships for easy movement. Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......There are only four locations that I know of with lodging along the Dalton. Yukon River Camp at the Yukon bridge and Slate Creek Inn at Coldfoot are both typical work camps. There is at least one B&B operating at Wiseman that was highly regarded by one guy I talked to on the trip - Wiseman is a place I wish I'd spent more time. There are at least three lodging options in Deadhorse with the Prudhoe Bay Hotel being the most recommending (across the street from the Alaska Airlines terminal in Deadhorse) because it has some rooms with en suite bathrooms. Pictures of all but the B&B/s in Wiseman are on my blog at http://justfinding.blogspot.com/2013/07/communities-of-haul-road.html as well as three other posts about my Dalton trip in early July. There are lots of places to camp south of the Brooks Range - pickins are much slimmer on the north side. I loved it and wish I'd spent more time.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......For me, the Dalton, especially north of Atigun, has been the highlight of the trip. Well worth a couple nights sleeping in the tow.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......I'd think twice about dragging the trailer to Coldfoot. I did it with the pickup and I'd do it with the trailer IF I'm planning to spend some time on the slope, but otherwise... My Dalton report is on our blog.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Thanks, Lizzie. That was very helpful! Thanks to Janet for your thoughts and your role in pulling this community together! JohnRe: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Lizzie - can you give us a road report for Denali Highway? With a very sore dog we're thinking we're going to give it a pass, but I really want to do it.Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Spotted Aiden_J and their sidekick with their Northern Lite pickup campers northbound on the Dalton Wednesday afternoon as I was bobtailing south. We'd camped next to them in Seward's Resurrection South a couple weeks ago. For me, the Dalton has been the highlight of the trip so far. On another note, our King Charles Spaniel was attacked by a Bullmastiff in the Chena River State Park campground in Fairbanks. We'll be restructuring our activities for the rest of the trip as we care for Turk with his five broken ribs and punctured lung. :-(Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......We're enjoying another day of sunshine in Homer. We'll likely be here another day before wandering slowly up the Cook Inlet. The town's Fishhook Campground about halfway out the spit is only about 1/3 full. $15 for dry camping but I couldn't find a free boondocking spot in town so we're enjoying easy access to the water.Re: Yukon Ferry at DawsonJust came by the Taylor Highway intersection on our way into Tok. Highway sign says customs is closed. Still trying to figure out how to work it into our summer without impacting the Haines/Skagway loop.
