Gas engines only talk about horsepower because that all the can talk about. Horsepower determines top speed. So you can go 200kph! Where & when would you do this? Diesels however produce goobs of TORQUE! And torque determines acceleration! So whatever speed you want to go or can go, Diesel will get you there first! Plus, Diesel will get you way better fuel economy and way longer engine life (no gasoline to wash the cylinder walls bare with every stroke!) What's the down side of Diesel? They cost more to make but less to operate over the long term. Then why are most cars equiped with gas engines? It's cheaper!Re: Breakdown InformationWe were in Phoenix, filling up on Diesel when I noticed some coolant dripping under the back of my 06 Monaco Safari Cheetah Diesel pusher. The hose from the low point to the header tank had a leak near the low point where it did a 180 degree curve under a frame member. I was unable to buy a replacement hose, so I loaded up on extra antifreze and pressed on Eastward. We were driving thru Kansas on a windy and very cold day when I noticed that the dash heater was not putting out heat! Why? I found out 15 minutes later when the low cooling fluid light can on. I pulled over and found the back of of the RV was wet with cooling fluid. The cause was the hose from the header tank to the low point had split where it made 180 degree turn under a frame member. I limped to the next service station and made temp repairs by cutting off the degraded part of the hose and routed it more directly to the low point and clamped it. We bot enough antifreeze to refill the cooling system. On the way home we stopped for warranty service in Elkhart,IN and added this problem to the list. When the defective hose was replaced I rescued the hose from the garbage and dicovered that it was "zero pressure Marine exhaust hose"! This is the same Monaco that later went Bankrupt and my waranties are thus usless.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Like I tell the young guys with their muscle cars (or what passes for one now-a-days), - horsepower determines your top speed(untill you loose your license), - torque determins how fast you can accelerate... (still legal), Then I leave in my VW TDI....Re: Diesel vs gas......................A barrel of oil is refined into several energy 'fractions'. One that is heavier and higher in energy, is Diesel, another, lighter, is gasoline. Diesel fuel contains more energy than gasoline. Diesel engine use very high compression to extract all the energy, gasoline engines must use lower compression to get the available energy. The high compression Diesel engine also therefore has excellent torque characteristics. Torque equals acceleration, horsepower equals top speed. Diesels are expensive to manufacture, gas engines much less so. Both engines have their place but Diesels are preferred and becoming more popular. We now seem to be at the point where the Diesel fuel fraction is fully utilised and thus Diesel fuel prices are rising. My motorhome has a Cat C7, and the 'toad' is a VW TDI.Re: Diesel vs gas......................O.K. I prefer Diesel, so I pull a VW TDI Jetta behind the Cheetah. Sure hope that the high fuel prices will stimulate greater fuel production!Re: Diesel vs gas......................Here's the K.I.S.S. priciple of Diesel vs Gas; Horsepower determines vehicles top speed, Torque determines how fast you'll get there.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Here's the K.I.S.S. priciple of Diesel vs Gas; Horsepower determines vehicles top speed, Torque determines how fast you'll get there.Re: Breakdown Information outsider1924 wrote: My first RV experience was last night on the way home from the dealership. I purchased a 1992 Allegro Bay Diesel Pusher with a 230hp Cummins and 4spd Allison. About 15 miles southbound on I-35 the bus lost almost all power and the RPM's dropped from about 2200 to 1400. Any ideas ? Maybe your air cleaner collapsed and restricted engine breathing.....Re: Diesel vs gas...................... My DMax generates its max power at 3000 rpm. You are confusing torque with power. Bert I mean Diesel compared to Gas rigs. The explaination holds. Your rig's max torque will be at a lower RPM, and thats where you will accelerate or climb fastest. You'll probably turn even lower RPMs at cruise on the level, but in high gear. Of course at 3000RPM it certainly will sound like it's working harder!Re: Diesel vs gas...................... DavidPhillips wrote: So Jack what's your opinion on the subject? Two vehicles towing heavy rigs. Both have 300 HP. Both pulling same weight. One has higher torque. If the hill becomes very steep is it possible for one of the vehicles to slow down and the other keep going at the same speed even though they have the same horsepower? The rig with higher torque will reach the top of the hill first. On the level their top speeds would be the same, but the higher torque rig would get there first. IMHO
