The ones we used were big block chevy and Ford gassers that got 11 hwy and maybe 6 pulling. In those cases the wind deflectors helped by a half mile per gallon. (maybe) which reduced gas cost pulling a trailer by around ten percent. Today, with the more efficient deisels, the detectable differences with or without a deflector would be marginal at best and not worth the cost unless you plan on driving like an over the road tractor trailer rig.Re: 5th Wheel Purchase AdviceArctic Fox makes or made a 23 footer that would line up with that truck. It weighs around 7600 lbs.regular cab towingI'm an old fan of regular cab trucks. I now tow a light-weight 7,000 lb, 5th wheel with a Ram 2500 crew cab and 5.7 Hemi, which proved to be a good match. My wife likes the regular cabs because she finds them easier to drive with the improved visibility through the rear window. I like them for the same reason and also for the longer bed without a very long truck length. Other than us two we travel with a 14 lb mini dachshund. Our next truck will in all likelihood be a regular cab. Does anyone else have the same idea?towing with 1/2 ton towable trailer.I have a Cougar lite that weighs 7,000 lbs empty. I load it up to another 800 lbs, so I'm around 8,000 including myself. The hitch weight is around 1200 factory, but I'm sure that's up to 1800 by now. Presently, I tow with a Dodge 2500 and it doesn't feel the weight behind it. Tows great. I only plan to go to the end of the warranty on this truck and then buy a new one. Next time, I would like to tow with a 1/2 ton for the better ride and price. Anyone towing an 8000 lb 5th wheel with a half ton truck? How well does it tow?Re: front jacksIf you don't have any luck with the previous responses, call your nearest dealer and give them your vin number. They can trace it from there.Re: Negotiating Price on New 5th from a DistanceI've done that with trucks and have had great success. After sending pictures from all angles, I got a trade in price for my old truck. My last 5th wheel, I bought in New Jersey when We were camping in Island Lake, Il. When I got to the dealership, the trailer I saw on line had water damage in different places. It was as no deal for us, and not too far out of our way from Pa where we live. After seeing the lemon, we perused the dealership lot and found a four year old Cougar in perfect condition and hard used. We are wintering in it right now and still happy with the deal.Re: US 191I was thinking along the same lines Cloud. We're presently in Port Isabel Tex laying low until mid March. Then we'll stay in Albuquerque until things in Utah warm up. By late April, I figure we'll check the temps and stay around Flaming Gorge area until Yellowstone warms up. From there on to Mount Rushmore and finally home to Scranton Pa by Mid to late June. Hope this works.Re: destinations for a January trip?I would stay anywhere along or south of I-10. Yuma, quartzite Az, sodona, san antonio, big bend national park, south texas and the florida coasts.US 191I'm already planning a trip to the National Parks in Utah and then taking 191 to Wyoming and then on to Mt Rushmore for the spring. Would I be safer to pull the trailer in mid-May? My concern is the higher elevations, but don't want to take the trip when it's too hot since we won't have electric for the A/C for days on end. We have dogs and they can't take excessive heat. Thanks.Re: theft deterrentThey make one that looks like a short pipe. It slides over the pin and there's a slot cut-out to put a heavy padlock in. If you google fifth wheel pin lock, I'm sure you'll find it.
