All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available I've asked myself, did I hit 3000 or 3500? Well, in all this confusion, I had to ask myself, do you feel lucky, punk, well, do you? Honestly, I was observing the temp readout on the scanner, and speed, I didn't look at the rpm. I'll have to go test again at some point. I'm happy with the info I have. At 70 or less, I have no coolant or heating issues. If I have to, I'll replace the head gaskets. A little more complicated than the 5.4 head gasket job but not a problem. If I go to that much trouble, I will get heads with O-rings and injector cups. That will be as good as it gets for this engine. There are other serviceable items to change in the engine top end to improve reliability. O-rings and head studs are the best improvements. Meanwhile, we're ready to head to Quartsite. Taking a new route this year, 395 from Pendleton all the way down to the end, then east to Q. Should be fun and full of interesting things to see and do. Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, out on Road NF-26 VIDEO: Mt Baker Snoqualmie NF Road 26 Checking It Out I spent a couple days in the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, out on Road NF-26 with my faithful cat Archie. Had a great time being surrounded by such thick dense forest with the ground carpeted in a lush green moss and ferns. It's about 23 miles +/- to get to Sulphur Creek Campground and trailhead which was closed for the end of season. There was plenty of room outside the gate for a few vehicles if somebody wanted to go there this time of the year. There are no services and if a Ranger patrols the area, I have no idea of the regularity of that happening. There is a trail acces there with plenty of parking for a remote location. Have food, water, fuel, and any supplies you think you may need if you go here in the off season. Beware, if significant snow falls, you may become stuck. There are several other campgrounds along the way so if you can't get a spot at one, look for another. Summertime may present a bigger challenge for a camp spot. Well worth the effort. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available I have read, if you see a 10+ degree difference, you need to swap out the oil cooler, I've read the temperatures should be close to the same when the oil cooler is unclogged and functioning properly. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available I've wondered that myself. There is no indication, blackening of coolant or bubbling in degas bottle to indicate a head gasket issue. Temperature gauge error? Unloaded, there is no issue. Add 4000 pounds TC, issue. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available I think the severe duty fan clutch is the better way to go for controlling heat. I did that and I do not hear the supposed greater noise people say happens unless the computer tells the fan to lockup. You do hear it then. You can also see the engine temperature rapidly begin to drop. When I hit that fan switch, the overheating goes away. I'm trying to get to where the fan is only needed in the worst of situations. I purposely avoided using the fan switch during testing this trip. I probably would have had no issues had I switched the fan on. I wouldn't have the results I was looking to get though. The other advantage of the severe duty fan clutch over the 7.3 adaption is it plugs into the wire harness and works with the system so you don't get an engine MIL light. If the 6.0 Liter radiator is considered an upgrade for the 7.3, that would suggest the 6.0 Liter does run hotter and needs greater cooling. The 7.3 reservoir bottle vent hose could connect to the the tube on top of the 6.0 radiator but an alteration would have to be made for the hose from the bottle that connects to the bottom of the radiator since the 6.0 only has one connection.I recall reading a 6.4 liter radiator was an upgrade to the 6.0 Liter. I'll have to check on that. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available The engine may have been chipped, producing more HP than stock. Another guy I was having a beer with looked at the truck, liked it of course, and thought it looked like a larger turbocharger had been installed. I do have some service record information through CarFax but no idea what work may have been done outside of that. The truck does have pretty serious power. Keep in mind, all this is happening with the TC loaded but never unloaded. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available It does occur to me the temperature sending unit may not be accurate. The numbers it does send are consistent. I ay try installing a new temp sensor at some point. One thing it may do if indeed the sending unit is providing low temp numbers, is to register higher numbers which would give the computer proper information which my cause the engine to run differently. It could also kick the fan to lockup, something I have never seen happen without using the blue wire switch. The doubt of whether the thermostaat is in error is that the truck runs at 185, the thermostat rating, when at 65 or 70 mph. Time will tell. for now, I'm very happy with the running temperature the engine has now. No worries up to 70 and after 75, I need to be observant going up long grades for progressing temperatures to prevent coolant from being vented out. Further updates as they get figured out. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available UPDATE: Got truck on freeway and ran it up to 76 mph. 76 going up a long grade was the limit, it hit 198 degrees and blurted out coolant. Above 70 going up grade, it will max at 190 and no coolant loss. At 70 or less. It will stay at 183-185 consistantly. At idle it drops to 180-178. I can live with that. Not sure why the system hits limit at 75 mph going up grade. I could probably do 80 on flat ok. Some states have 80 mph speed limits. Get better mileage at 65 anyway. That's the best I can do with all the cooling upgradegs I've made. Listed as follows 185 degree thermostat, BPD aluminum coolant pump, rerouting coolant filter return into the radiator, the severe duty fan clutch, blue wire fan lockup switch, the next options would a BPD or similar external oil cooler, replace heater core which may have clogging. The EGR has already been removed prior to my ownership. I'm not the only person who has overheating issues with a 6.0 liter Power Stroke as many videos on YouTube demonstrate. At least I have achieved manageable cooling in my engine. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available I have a Mishimoto 185 degree thermostat in now. After we drive down to Arizona and see how the truck performs, I'll decide If I want to reinstall the slightly used new Motorcraft 192 degree stock thermostat. My experience is, this engine can get hot fast going up hills. I always have my INNOVA 5610 scanner connected showing live data, focus on coolant temperature. With the new radiator installed, You should think It will never overheat and blow out coolant again. Until I establish that it will not overheat, I'll keep the 185 in and the scanner connected. I see a lot of videos dealing with 6.0 Liter engines overheating. That is why they have a BPD kit to install a 7.3 fan clutch. I prefer what I did, installing the 6.0 Liter severe duty, snowplow fan clutch. I notice no difference in the amount of noise it produces over the standard fan clutch. It does get louder when I hit the blue switch to manually kick it on to lock up full speed. It rapidly drops the engine temperature when I turn that fan switch on. Highly recommend the blue wire switch mod to anyone. Another advantage getting the severe duty fan clutch instead of the 7.3 clutch is it works with the truck electronic control system, no engine light... That about sums it up. If the temps stay at 185 going over some of the big passes heading south on 395 and when we get down into Death Valley and Yuma. I'll decide if I want to reinstall the 192 thermostat. As I stated, I'll setup the truck for the worst conditions. Re: AFE Power - Blade Runner - Radiator - Biggest Best 6.0 Liter FORD Diesel Truck Cooling Available The truck has 80k on it. When I pulled the valve covers to do the injectors, it was spotlessly clean inside. This engine has had regular oil changes. It has had the EGR system deleted and a straight right up pipe installed. I suspect due to the cleanliness of the engine, the oil cooler may have also been changed. The oil and coolant temperature gauges show the same temperature which is what you want, indicating a clear unclogged egr cooler. The heater core could also be clogged with contaminants. The old smaller radiator was clearly heavier than the new larger 3 care aluminum radiator. My presumption is the weight of the old radiator was from crud built up inside. So far, results are impressive.
