We purchased it for $193,000 including sales tax which was $10,300 and registration/tags which was another $1000. We sold the coach back to the dealer for $171,000. So our “loss” was roughly $12,000 (not counting tax and tags as you would never recover cost of tax and tags). We used the coach from mid September to mid March (they take possession on 3/14). This $12,000 is basically the same as if we rented an apartment for 6 months so, in my mind, we spent $2000 a month “renting” our motor home instead of renting the house we were in and learning a life lesson about what we thought we might like and didn’t. Could have turned out a lot worse but we walk away with our loan paid off and zero obligations. We are fine with that.Re: Not for usIt’s not to small to travel in but it’s too small to live in. We usually fly first class and book a suite on the ship. A week or two on a ship is no comparison to 6 months in a 37’ motor home.Re: Not for usWell the saga is almost over. La Mesa has agreed to buy back our motor home for what we owe on it and that is only 10K less than we paid for it (not counting sales tax). So it cost us a bit to realize that RV’ing is not for us and we will go back to a sticks and bricks lifestyle that offers more living space and comfort. We’ll do our traveling on cruise ships from here on out. Thanks for everyone’s input and insight during this journey of deciding what to buy and what to do. At the end of the day we could have spent a lot more money on a coach and still not been happy. All the best to everyone.Re: 2022 Tiffin Open Road, Ford 7.3L V8. Exhaust system too hotWe had melted hydraulic lines for the leveling jacks. Can’t say that I really looked for excessive heat as it appeared the hydraulic lines weren’t properly secured and fell down against the exhaust pipe. We have just over 5000 on ours and quite frankly are disappointed with build quality. Have had hydraulic lines replaced, gas regulator replaced, leak in the Truma repaired, windshield wiper repaired and just had the front ac/heat pump replaced today. Have also had various and sundry other minor issues such as split wood, mis-aligned cabinet drawers and doors, replaced a basement door strut that kept falling off, two letters in “Allegro” on the front fell off. Furnace wires reversed ( front switch turned on the rear and vice versa). Wife hates it and will probably get rid of it shortly.Re: Not for usI won’t sell it for a loss. Don’t think there is any reason to. It’s a 2022 with the 26,000 lb chassis and liquid springs and only has 5000 miles on it. If I can’t at least get what I owe on it I’ll continue to suck it up and live in it for awhile longer. We aren’t desperate and our site is paid until November with options for two more years at $4500 per year.Re: Not for usThe resort we are in is fabulous if you are a full time retiree. 4 pools, hot tub, bistro, library, 18 hole par 3 golf course, wood shop, lapidary shop, silversmith shop, pottery shop, sewing building, billiard and dart room, softball field, tennis, pickle ball, lawn bowling, card rooms horse shoes. I’m sure I am missing things but if you are bored here it’s your own fault. There are many homes being put in here (12-1300 sq ft) and I think it will become more homes than RV spots at some point. The biggest down side to me is you can only rent your lot, never own like where my parents live in FL. People are super friendly. Most from the midwest and Canada. I think if we were both full time retired it would be a great place. We considered getting a house here but what they are charging ( around $200,000 - -$240,000) we could by a couple of acres and the same manufactured home for $75,000 less.Re: Not for usTo answer a few questions, we had originally thought we would try workcamping and travel around but seeing that most jobs wanted someone to do some kind of maintenance work, landscaping or cleaning rental cabins and bathrooms that isn’t something we wanted to do. Yes, I’m sure there are jobs like at the resort we are in that are office jobs, security or ranger jobs but I’m sure those will go to the park residents or experienced people first. I had an opportunity to start a machinery distributorship with a partner and with that being what I did for most of my career that made the most sense and will bring in the most money. No, I don’t prefer mowing lawns to dumping tanks. That is why we will likely wind up renting a townhouse or condo and leave all that to someone else. I leave my black tank closed until it gets to 2/3 full or more. I don’t want any build up to occur which would cause more problems down the road so I dump every 4 days and wash it out once a week. Not for usWell, I’m sad to say I think my wife and I have decided that, after 6 months of full timing, it is not for us. Neither is living in a 55+ resort. We are in Palm Creek in Casa Grande, AZ. The park is beautiful and there is lots to do here but my wife is 54 and works from home 40 hours a week. I started a machinery distributorship with a partner and I am out 3-4 days a week making sales calls during the day. So, other than the occasional show in the evening we really can’t take advantage of all there is to offer. Plus everyone here is at least 10 years older than me and probably 15-20 years older than my wife so we really don’t fit in. As far as the motor home goes, it’s a 2022 Allegro Open Road 36LA. It’s nice enough but we miss not having the space that a home provides. Yes, I know we should have probably rented something and tried it first before buying but even spending a week or two doesn’t compare to full time living. I never thought there would be so much to do to the motor home. It’s always dumping black tanks every 4 days, recharging the soft water system every two weeks, descaling the Truma every few weeks, refilling the propane tank every other week, etc., etc. I’m sure if I had done more homework prior to diving in I would have been better prepared but, it is what it is.Allegro36LA Black TankJust curious but, we have a bath and a half with two toilets. One is a standard foot flush and the other is a macerator. When I dump the black tank there is an initial rush of effluent then it kind of slows and then there is a secondary rush. Is the black tank partitioned such that one side empties and then the other?Re: Shower RemodelI’m not sure what I’m willing to spend. Maybe $5,000 and doing a good bit of the work myself. Perhaps tile isn’t the answer and I’d be happy with staying with fiberglass. Maybe using a sabre saw and cutting out the molded seat and putting in a second sheet of fiberglass wall to cover the hole would be the least expensive route if I could make it look decent. Doug - If I had $300K plus to buy a Phaeton I would have. Some of us have to work within the budget we have.
