We left Denali this morning and will be in Fairbanks a couple of days. Thank goodness, the rain has stopped. Our first 3 days in Denali were beautiful! We saw Mt McKinley in all its glory driving up from Anchorage and while we were in the park going back to Wonder Lake. We got to see 5 wolfs from 1 pack, caribou, moose and several grizzlies on our shuttle tour. Such a very nice trip! We will be leaving Tok sometime next week. I'm still concerned from all the post about taking the Alcan back past Watson Lake and beyond. We came up the Cassier and it was fine. Just wondering if we should go back that way. Is the worst of the Alcan around the border?!?! Thanks for everyones post. Since we had not made plans to make the trip to AK, when we left Alabama, all the post REALLY helped us in getting here! Thanks for helping make it a great trip! Sue T....I'm looking forward to visiting some of the Provincial Parks you recommended before! JudyRe: To Deali via FairbanksI don't think you will drive 300รท miles a day and enjoy your trip. We arrived in Tok on Aug 1. We accessed the Alcan via the Cassier Hwy. From blogs and talking with friends we thought the Cassier would be our worst driving, it was not. We drove from Whitehorse to Border City, about 350 miles and it took us over 10 hours. The bad roads and construction were the worst the last several miles. This isn't to discourage but so you will be prepared. Had we realized how slow we would have to drive we would not have attempted the drive in one day! Unfortunately after we got to the borders there was no place to stop. When we got to Border City we should have stopped but the roads were good so we decided we could make it to Tok only to have more construction. We found a nice pullout and spent the night because we were so tired and drove to Tok the next morning. All that to say, plan on slow going and about 200 miles a day. Don't push it so you can enjoy it! Thanks for the question about Denali. We will be headed there in a week or so and I was wondering if we would need reservations. Sounds like it is a good time to go!! Hope you enjoy your trip! We certainly have and learned alot from all these bloggers!Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......I was also wondering when in September we need to be heading to the lower 48? First time here and don't know what to expect. We also have to consider the weather in Jasper, Banif, & Calgary. We would like to enter the US through Glacier NP and visit. Should that be a safe plan if we leave AK after Sept 15 or so??Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Janet -Cassier Hwy You are so right about the Cassier being better! We thought we had it made after we made it to Whitehorse. We arrived in Tok yesterday and could not believe how bad the road was from Beaver Creek. I'm trying not to even think about the return trip! lol An early post from May mentioned how bad the road was from Watson Lake to Ft Nelson. Does anyone know if this has improved? Whatever the road conditions....we are in ALASKA and we intend on enjoying it!! A dream come true!Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......Janet Diesel at Dease Lake Super Foods was $1.469. It is available at several locations along Cassier. Just off Hwy 37 on Hwy 16 in Old Hazelton we stayed at Ksan RV Park. They gave a .06 discount for fuel. We paid $1.209 for diesel!!Re: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......I have been following the post to RC 2013 since we began thinking of heading to AK a couple of weeks ago. We were in LaPine OR and decided we were as close as we would ever be to AK from Alabama! We left Sumas Tuesday AM and arrived in Whitehorse today. We are at Pioneer RV as some of you suggested in your post. We traveled the Cassier Hwy and I have to say it wasn't as bad as I had expected! There were some unpaved sections and narrow but not the horror I was thinking. It sounds like we may have rough roads ahead of us before we get to Tok. We stayed at the Provincial park just before you turn toward Stewart and it was a very nice, pretty park with several big rig sites. Unfortunately we were a few days early to see the bears at the boardwalk. The salmon had just started. We also stayed at Ksan CG in Hazelton. They had a native dance at the historical village. It was a very nice stay. They are doing construction work on the bridge so there is a slight delay but not bad. I do have a question. Does anyone know where I can purchase the Church's Campground book locally? Thanks for all the good information posted here!Re: Travels from Birmingham, AL to Alaska2gypsies Thanks for all your info and post. I have read many that you posted on AK and they are VERY helpful. I have made notes of a lot of your entries for reference. We look for nature also and not so much attractions. I know there are some attractions that we will probably want to do, maybe a glacier tour. I wish we were as comfortable traveling and boondocking in our 40 footer as yall seem to be. Maybe by the time we leave AK, we will be! Your info make it easier for all us "first-timers". Thanks again.Re: Travels from Birmingham, AL to AlaskaHey Pleasant Grove, we are from Hueytown. We are in LaPine, OR and hope to head to Alaska in a few days. I have been reading this forum getting as much info as possible. When we left home May 28 we had no plans to go to AK. We were just going to CA, OR, WA. Now we have decided since we are this close, we should go. We were concerned it might be to late leaving OR. but sounds from some of the replies here we might have time to go and not have to hurry to much! We have been to several of the places yall are planning for your trip next year. I will try to reply back to you when we get home with some info. If anyone has any advice/info for us, it would be greatly appreciated. We don't have any info with us. Like I stated, we just decided to go last week. Are we crazy for heading to Alaska without planning and this time of year?!?Re: Border crossing with a petDo we need the rabies tag or just the rabies cert? I have that and the shot record but NOT the tags. We have cats and they don't wear collars, so I didn't bring tags. We are thinking of going on to Ak since we are in OR headed to WA. We are this close, why not? Just don't want any issues with the fur babies!
