Love being able to unzip all or some of the windows when I want to see outside, or we are inside when it's raining. Love cooking outside on the camp stove (small inside stove isn't convenient) and washing dishes outside (one only sink in our PUP). It keeps me outside more enjoying nature. I even enjoy cooking and washing dishing under the awning when it rains. We can keep our PUP at our home, but a TT wouldn't fit. There's still a market for folding trailers if you aren't just comparing price. 2004 Fleetwood UtahRe: Where are all the folding trailer Fans?I did chaperone on my daughter's girls youth campout with our church this summer. We used tents. Also, went with both my kids (each brought a friend) on an overnight tent campout with some other families. The husband stayed home. He doesn't like to tent camp anymore. Don't like to tent camp in the rain, but it did rain that night.Re: Where are all the folding trailer Fans?I also read every post on the folding trailer forum. I used to sign into RV.NET every day and read this forum along with Around the Campfire, General RVing, and Beginning RVing. I'd frequently look at other sections too. Since there aren't many posts here anymore, and I've read the questions and answers from the other sections so often, I sometimes go a couple months without logging in. Many of the people I used to know are gone or don't post anymore. There's few who are still frequent posters. My husband used to participate in the forum especially when we first bought our PUP 12 years ago. He's only logged on 2-3 times in the last several years when he had a specific issue he needed help with. Mike was the moderator back then, and we learned a lot from him. Our kids are busy with school and sports. We normally just go camping for 4-5 days over Memorial Day weekend, and one full week in August. We still have our 2004 Fleetwood Utah we bought new. It's still a good shape. Love cooking and eating outdoors (with a fire when allowed) and having the windows unzipped to enjoy nature if it's raining, and we are keeping dry playing games or reading inside.Re: Awning fell off yesterdayWe have a 2004 Fleetwood Utah we bought new. Never happened to us. Glad it didn't happen while you were going down the freeway. My husband and I still have the original bag awning though we need a new one. We are considering going to a different type of awning. Can't remember the name of it.Re: This is a reason why Pop Ups aren't selling...... mdamerell wrote: When I was a kid we had a popup. Everything above the 2' high sidewall was canvas. Had to snap a canvas cover over the whole thing before it went down the road (no hard top). No sink, no potty, no fridge, nothing but an empty floor. Basically a tent mounted on a trailer. Much of the increase in price is probably all the "extras" found in popups like fridges, stoves, slide outs, A/C unit, etc.... It's probably easier to put all that in a fixed wall trailer than make it so it open up, rises up, etc.. for you to put the canvas panels in. When we went looking for a tent trailer in 2004, we wanted something off the ground with places to sleep. Would have loved to have the bunk ends with a mattress to climb up into and just a bare floor to store our clothes and room to change clothes without stepping on sleeping bags and people. My aunt had some kind of tent trailer when I was a kid that opened up with one large bed you stepped up into, and then you had an area to dress and store stuff. I didn't want to get up and down from the ground every time I got up for myself or my kids. Dh has a hard time getting up off the ground. Also, we didn't want to worry about the floor of the tent getting wet. Even though we have a sink and stove inside our PUP, I wash dishes outside using two tubs, and we cook outside using the PUP's external stove (could just as easily use a camp stove). We love having a campfire for hot dogs, marshmallows, pie iron dinners, and tin foil dinners when campfires aren't banned. It is nice to have the lights and heat. I do put up the tent in the backyard at least once a summer for the kids and I to sleep in. They love it. JeanRe: This is a reason why Pop Ups aren't selling...... Put all that in a real trailer and my 85' S-10 couldn't have pulled it, and I obviously wouldn't have been able to store it in the garage. Don't confuse a PUP with anything else. Just because use the price points are blurring doesn't mean you automatically fall into the next category up, because they are not the same regardless of price. You have a good point about having a vehicle that's able to pull a heavier TT. There are many considerations other than the price of the TT vs PUP. My husband's truck could pull a TT. I've read comments where people question why someone would have such a big truck while their pulling a PUP. We always wonder why others feel we should buy a 2nd truck just to pull our PUP for the few times a year we use it. We prefer to save the money for the kids' college education and for retirement. Or, maybe they feel dh should buy a truck for the couples times a year we use the PUP and get the smallest one possible for that instead of buying the truck he wants to drive every day. JeanRe: This is a reason why Pop Ups aren't selling...... FrankShore wrote: Good post OP! Brings out the difference with clarity and explanation! It is a good post about the price comparison with lower end TTs and a reason why more people are probably buying TTs. There are reasons families like mine don't buy a TT though we've considered it many times. Dh and I enjoyed tent camping as children, but don't want to be in a small area sleeping with kids on the ground. We want somewhere to stay dry if it rains. We cook, eat and stay outside when possible. We like a big area to dress, and a place to eat inside if it rains. With two king-size bunk ends, we have plenty of room for sleeping at night. Also DH now has a CAP machine and needs electricity. Don't want a noisy generator. It would nice to not have to set-up the PUP after we arrive at the campground and not have to transfer so much stuff from the back of the truck to the PUP. Kids love the PUP and don't want us to sell it anyway. Good reasons to own a TT or PUP. Price isn't the only factor for many of us. JeanRe: This is a reason why Pop Ups aren't selling......There are advantages to a TT. Dh and I have talked about the pros for years. However, we can park our PUP in our driveway, but not enough room for a TT. Plus, it doesn't block the view from the other neighbor down our one lane road. The others neighbors in our development don't see it from the main road (still could have it as no CCR against RVs). Don't have to pay for storage, nor travel to pick it up and drop it off. Easier traveling with it. Bought our PUP new about 11 years ago shortly after having our first child and paid cash. It is still in good condition. We usually only go on two 5 day camping trips a year. Our kids love the PUP, and we like our 2 king size beds. WE have many good family memories with the PUP. We also love cooking, eating and sitting outside at night. Normally go places during the day. We still feel like we are camping with a PUP. JeanRe: Cassette toilet questionOur 2004 Fleetwood Utah folding trailer also has the snaps and came with a privacy curtain. JeanRe: Community Campfires?Don't care if there's a community campfire as long as we can still have our own campfire at our site. With work, school, sports, taking care of elderly parent in assitant living, and church functions it's hard to find time to be alone together with our kids. We go camping twice a year for one week each. We love sitting around our campfire talking, roasting hot dogs and smores, or putting tin foil dinners in the coals. Jean
