We wish you all happy trails and safe travels.Re: Looking to buy a diesel pusher - How big is too big???Heck CO, Don't give up on it.... Just figure out how to make it fly... ; >)Re: Looking to buy a diesel pusher - How big is too big???Again thanks for all the input... I found newer updated regulations for Canada that allow 45 footers (14 meters) so long as they have 3 axles (meaning a tag). They also allow for a 2 vehicle combo of 20 meters (65.5 feet). And that is as of Sep 2016 And I don't drive anything in D.C.... Better off in public transportation...Re: Looking to buy a diesel pusher - How big is too big???Thanks for all the advice and info... It got me to looking up restrictions - we intend to spend a lot of time in Alaska which means going through Canada... Maximus length everywhere except Yukon is 12.5 meters or 41'6"... We also want to tow a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Approximately 33 states have 65' combined length restrictions as well.... Dang. What an eye opener. Glad you all are giving me things to consider. I would have completely missed those two important points.... You all are the best.Re: Looking to buy a diesel pusher - How big is too big???Thank you both for your quick replies. We were just at the Phoenix Good Sam's RV Show... Spent a week there and found exactly what we think we are looking for. Glad to hear neither of you have regrets or issues. Thanks again. BillLooking to buy a diesel pusher - How big is too big???So here is the story... We've been RVers since the late '70s. Started in a van conversion, moved up to a small class "c", then up to a 30 foot fifth wheel. We are shifting away from our current camping style - a good deal of which was spent primitive (dry) camping and trail riding in the back country interspersed with long, cross country sight-seeing trips. We have now decided to go full time this year and pretty much stick to cross country sight seeing. We've spent several months shopping around and paring down the list of coaches we like and have narrowed it down to two. But they are both in the 40 to 45 foot range. We will probably move around a lot in the new rig, but stay in any given area long enough to really check out all the local sights and offerings. We may stay in one place a couple of days, or maybe a month. Just depends. We keep hearing rumors that many people regretted moving up into units that big and that begs the question: How big is too big? We really like the 45 footers but do not want to stay in big, expensive luxury resorts... not our style. And we will have a 4X4 toad that will get us to the places we want to see. I know we won't fit in most state and national parks, but should be able to find a suitable RV parks within a reasonable driving distance... Are we shooting ourselves in the foot here? Please share your experiences, thoughts, and advice... We only get one chance to do this right... can't afford a mistake. Thanks in advance. Bill & Nettie.Re: Why the extra bathroom door?We occasionally have others that go camping with us in our 30 footer. It's nice to be able to close the bedroom off seperately in that instance, using a folding accordian door that takes up zero useable space. It sits between the bathroom sink and the wardrobe.. The pocket door on the other side of the bathroom only takes up a few inches between the pantry and the shower on one side. That "lost" space is so negligible it's not even worth mentioning. Happy to have both.Re: 5-2-1 Compressor Saver vs DuoTherm Hard Start kit??Ditto on a bigger gennie... Tried the twin Honda 2000 thing... Pain in the butt. Moved up to a Yamaha 6300sdi for extended boondocking. Powers everything. At the same time. Remote start/stop with a clicker. Carry a Champion 3100 as a "just in case" when not boondocking also with remote.Re: Introducing Ourselves: Two 23-year-old fulltimersWelcome! Good for you. We're avid RV'ers and have been part timing it for decades ... The last 13 years in our trusty old 5th Wheel. We are pulling the trigger on a new motorhome next spring and going full time as soon as the house sells. Who knows... Might see you down the road somewhere. Safe travels... Enjoy.Re: need a decent mattressJust a heads-up for somethings you might need to consider. We also have a 5th Wheel and purchased a new memory foam matress. Love it. But there can be issues. Ours is thicker than our OEM mattress. No issue while you are sleeping, but since my bed slides under the edge of our wardrobe closet by about a foot when the bedroom slide is brought in, we have to pull the sheets/blankets/comforter up at the foot end and fold them over to allow the mattress to slip under the lip of the closet. Also, in colder climates, memory foam becomes cold, stiff, and inflexible until your body heat softens it back up some. We countered this with a heated mattress cover - just set it on a comfy temp 30 minutes or so before bedtime. Softens it right up. Then we just turn it off - unless it's really cold outside.
