All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Interesting TV / Popup CombosMy wife and I are now both 75 (and she is handicapped) We have been camping all our married life starting with tents and sleeping bags on a small motorcycle and working up over the years to big motorcycles and towing a small cargo trailer. At one time I designed and built a folding camper that was big enough for the two of us. but just barely. In 2013, I gave up motorcycles and bought a GMC terrain with the v6 for the towing power. (rated at 3500lbs.) Then we bought a 2010 Palomino Yearling Y-4124 pop up camper that looked like it would do the job. And it has. We've been using it 5 or 6 times a year since then to go camping by ourselves or with the kids and grand kids. I took it on it's first trip and then added brakes and a AC unit and the controller myself. I have also installed the friction type anti sway bar. The unit loads out at 2800 lbs. and works for us. I will admit that as I get older I keep thinking about a TT for ease of setup, but we have decided that if we(I) get to old to handle set up then we are going to be done with camping. But we are going to enjoy it as long as we can. FrankRe: Exterior Painting of MotorhomeThis going to be the short version of what I have decided to do on my 1992 Fleetwood Pace Arrow motor home. After going through the unit and cleaning it up with soap and water. Then replacing the Toilet, Water Pump Relay, "Both" type 31 batteries and several switches and small misc. parts I was able to run a more thorough evaluation of what to do next I came up with this list of things that still needed work. I had to replace the Power Steering Pump, The Hydro boost unit, and the Brake Master Cylinder. (The brakes and steering were lousy. The steering's still loose) I resealed the roof because of a leak that has ruined one wall and needs replacing. The generator needs work, most of the latches on the storage section need repairing or replacing. Last but not least I need to put new tires on the unit. And then there's the paint issue. There are also other issues, Thanks for all the great suggestions by everyone, but I have decided not to throw any more money into it. FrankRe: Gas MileageTropical36: You're probably right. Somewhere in the literature, I thought that I read that it had the Allison Transmission. Since you brought the subject up, I thought that I should go back and look at the Factory Manual for the chassis. In the 7th chapter on transmissions it calls it a Hydra-Matic 4L80-E. So nothing special other than it shifts just fine. I've been under it once or twice and I seem to remember that it had a coil spring front end suspension. When I got it and drove it back to the house all the tires were low, but other than the front end feeling a little loose it was fine. Since then I've pumped the tires to 90 psi and now I seem to have a wobble at about 40mph. Looks like I might need some front end work also. On the other hand since I brought it home a local shop has replaced the Hydro Boost Unit, The Power Steering Pump, and the Master Cylinder. I want to check underneath and make sure that they bolted the steering gear links and arms back solidly before I have any expensive work done to it. FrankRe: Exterior Painting of MotorhomeWestend: Nice job. Does Sherwin Williams have all the products that you mentioned in your post? FrankRe: Exterior Painting of MotorhomeOne of the replies suggested using Marine paint. The website claims that a brush and roller will do a fairly good job. As was stated in a previous post, I'm looking for Earl Sheib, not Michelangelo. FrankRe: Exterior Painting of MotorhomeThanks for all the suggestions. It appears that the least expensive paint job would be Rustoleum with a sprayer after just good prep work. I'll take all of this into consideration and see what I want to do. I came into possession of this thing through a fluke and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth keeping and throwing some money into or just donating it to some charity and taxing the tax deduction. The previous owners seemed to take very good care of it, but again it's 24 years old. I have ALL the maintenance and repair manuals for just about every thing in it. And I'm mechanically inclined, but I'm 75 years old and wondering just how much to try to bite off with this project. I'll let the forum know what I decide. Thanks FrankRe: Gas MileageThanks for all the replies so quickly. The answers were about what I was guessing at (4 to 8mpg) depending on terrain and speed. For the one questioner, It is a P-30 Chevy chassis and the engine, cooling system and tranny was rebuilt in 2014 and a SWAG on the mileage on the engine is about or less than 6k miles. (The odometer doesn't work any more, Something else to fix.) FrankGas MileageWhat kind of gas mileage could you get with a 37 foot fleetwood motor home with a: 454 Chevy Engine Allison Transmission Tag Axle. Are we talking 4 mpg, 6 mpg, or possibly 8 mpg. I'm just looking for an approximation under normal conditions as I have never had this rig on the road for more than a few miles at a time. FrankExterior Painting of MotorhomeThis is going to generate a lively discussion I imagine. My Class "A" motor home is looking pretty sad. As it's 24 years old, it's not bad, but the paint is faded, scuffed, scratched, etc. I wondering if an individual could anticipate a reasonably descent looking job if they painted it themselves. What kind of paint would you be willing to use and how would you apply it. Spray paint, Brush and Roller, etc. What I'm looking for is a reasonably good looking paint job at the lowest practical price. Has anyone ever painted a motor home with a good grade of Exterior Gloss House Paint? FrankRe: New PopUpA battery cut off switch would be good, a simple solution is a 20 amp fuse with a water proof fuse holder inline on the positive side of the battery. You didn't mention it, but does the Rockwood have brakes?
