Re: stupid mistake
Been there, done that. While hitching up the fiver, the pin dropped in the open jaws of the hitch, & no matter what I did the jaws would not close. This is where I got brain freeze that I can't explain. The landing gear was up, & I decided that if I backed up a little it would send the pin home, & the jaws would close. I removed the chocks from the trailer wheels, & closed the tail gate, got in the truck, with my brain still frozen, & backed up. Well we all know that the jaws didn't close, & when I stepped on the brake the trailer continued to roll, off the hitch plate, & onto the bed of the truck. When that happened we had been towing the fiver for 7 years. That one cost Allstate over 5K. John351Views0likes0CommentsRe: backing on wrong side
All good advice. We live on a narrow street, & the driveway is 250' long. I back in on the blind side, & use the power mirror to watch the trailer wheels enter the driveway cut. Been doing it 7yrs & sometimes I back it right in, & once in a while it's like I have never done it before. When that happens just start over, & take your time. All depends on the floor plan of the trailer. I would think the some of the new front kitchen floor plans would be over weight. We have a 34" Montana with a pin weight of 2,400lbs, & tow with a 2016, SRW,long bed, one ton Ford. Just put on a truck stop scale, loaded for travel, with a full tank of fuel, & it showed 7,020lbs on the rear axle. All depends on the floor plan & pin weight. Don't know which brand of truck you are looking at, but when I ordered my 2016 long bed Ford, the short bed carried about 12 Gal. less fuel. Once you add the extra fuel tank to a short bed truck, that much more storage space is gone, & you have added more weight to the rear of a SRW truck. John464Views0likes0Comments
