I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers on 18 x 9 Motto Metal wheels. They perform perfectly and the ride is firm when aired up and soften up a bit when aired down (no camper). Speedometer is off about 3 mph, noticeable at highway speeds 60-65+MPH.. If you don't have a spacer lift, the tire will rub on the air dam and inside fender skirt at certain flex spots. I trimmed a bit off the air dam and took a heat gun to the fender liner to create some more room. Not sure how the 8" rim will change sidewall flex compared to a 9 or 10" aftermarket rim. Snap N Naps work with piano hinges at certain pivot points....see if this helps. patent pageRe: Rebuilding the Amerigo–Just call me the Demolition Man!Nice! Brings back memories.... I have a tip/what I did, to move the fiberglass bathroom in one piece. Finish removing all the cabinets and paneling so there is nothing in the way. Get your sawzall and cut the return flange in the vent area (a new vent 14 x 14, can be installed and the trim ring will cover your cut) flush with the top of the bathroom ceiling. With the plumbing fittings removed on the floor, you're ready to slide the bathroom out of the way. It is tight, you will need another helper that can "shoulder press" the roof beams to create some wiggle room. I could only move it to the the isle way and just inside the wing area. This opened up the bathroom area for repairs to the frame, new flooring, etc. One you're done, slide it back! Remove all (as many as you can) old screws, they rust and thin down and allow water to enter. Add bracing to those upper back corners tying the 2X6's to the 2x2's, this is where the "sag" comes from. Only a few screws hold this structural area, they rust and the back shifts down from the weight of the floor/snap n nap. Looks like you have the tear-down figured out..... Good luck with it!! I'll keep looking for your updates! If you have any other questions, hit me up, glad to try and help. DaveRe: How much weight can a snap n nap hold?Hi Wagonqueen, I had two adults on the Snap n Nap with no problems. I say it can handle 350-400 lbs. It will start bowing the aluminum frame, but it holds. I would put the "heavier" person towards the front. All your hardware to secure the bed assembly should be new or in good shape from the rebuild? to handle max weight situations. I always told the kids to not bounce around and horse play on it, thinking it would hurt it, but it held up! Good Luck! DaveRe: 1972 Amerigo Camper RebuildWagonqueen, your Amerigo came out great! How was your big trip?? I'll be sneaking into the MATC rally with a fifth wheel... :) I guess when you meet and make new friends, and catch up with old ones it's hard to stay away......good bunch of people. You should come on down and show yours off.....Re: A Kamper Rebirth - Planning - Propane Compartment (page 3)I know it is confusing to understand how the snap n nap works unless you tried opening/closing them. I'll try to explain what I experienced on mine... When the bed is out and you want to close it up, if I just lifted one side, the bed support would flex and bind on the opposite side. The side panels would need to have a tug on them so they wouldn't "lock up" I would have to reach the other side an give it a tug upward to keep it aligned. There were no cam followers in a track to keep it horizontal. Just like a roll up garage door out of the track... Once you pass the 1 foot mark, the weight of the bed/frame would bring it all in. So with that said, you making something from scratch could add a track on both sides with some type of wheel/guide that would let you pull it from one point with an assist strap as you are thinking.... Hope this helps, didn't want to muddy the waters for ya. Maybe some picks on TCM would help "see" the opening. look for rear bed shotRe: A Kamper Rebirth - Planning - Propane Compartment (page 3)When I was rebuilding my Amerigo, I found the patent for the snap n nap....it doesn't give you exact dimensions you would need, but cool old drawings showing the design concept....may give you some ideas... try making a scaled version to see if you can get the geometry correct... Don't worry about the large opening, box it with 2X4's and you'll be fine.....the rest of the interior (bathroom door frames, cabinets, floor. etc.) all lock the structure together to make a strong camper structure. You'll need more than a door opening to get the leverage needed to close the rear bed...opening is easier and done from out side the camper...just some tips I'd thought i would share.. Good Luck Joe! Happy to hear you're finished...that is a gratifying feeling. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. I wish you and your family many fun times using it. You'll make many memories......we did! DaveRe: Truck camper for 6? Wagonqueen Truckster wrote: My "76" Amerigo TC sleeps 6. 2 up top, 2 in the dinette and 2 in the "Snap N Nap" that opens up in the back. Thing is 21 feet open. Weighs 3000 lbs and I believe there is a REALLY nice one completely renovated somewhere in PA. Hi wagonqueen! yours is shaping up great! I just sold mine this past Monday to a nice gentleman from Ohio....bittersweet day for me. I have to say the Amerigo is on the list for sleeping capacity vs total weight of camper, however 5 is realistic, unless you have 2 three year olds in the dinette area :) We were in Gettysburg with 5. two teenaged boys teen age girl, me and my wife....all had a comfy bed. I'll still check in to see how you're making out and want to see the finished masterpiece. Dave
