Our first stop was Lake Dardanelle State Park just west of Little Rock (https://www.arkansasstateparks.com//park-finder/park.aspx?id=6). Nice park with stuff to do for kids if you have kids. Second stop was Fort Amarillo RV park. Spaces were tight but wifi worked and it was really just a place to rest after that long drive (526 miles). Yeah it was a long drive but its flat, set the cruise and go. In Albuquerque we stayed at the Albuquerque North/Bernalillo KOA. Well kept and level. Spaces were tight but we'd go again. Wifi worked great.Re: BEWARE Sportys To Go Tire/Auto Service I-15 Beaver UTWe just went by there this summer. After the mess we went through in Vegas, I'm glad we didn't run into this yahoo. Thanks for posting. Now that we have our own rv I know to watch out for stuff like this.Re: Observation on rentalsWe took a rental out for 4800 miles this summer. We only used the leveling blocks the last 2 days. Every time we stopped, I took out the level and if it was close, it was close enough.Re: First trip outGlad you had funRe: Accessibility tips for Devils Tower/Black Hills? mama.sylvia wrote: We just bought a 1988 Winnebago Superchief and are planning a trip to this area, probably in October of this year. I can only walk very short distances and can't climb at all. DH was more mobile but is battling a bout of sciatica that has limited his walking. I have looked on the Forest Service websites but haven't really found information on what is accessible. If you have visited this area, I would love tips on what is/isn't accessible at the usual destinations (Devils Tower, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse) as well as clues to what other features are accessible and enjoyable. I have a scooter but it doesn't get around well on anything except pavement - even dried out ground, that looks as hard as pavement to me, it can't manage. I have a manual wheelchair but no one to push it for me. I would also welcome suggestions for where to stay in a 27' class A. I'm not bad at backing but I need room. We were just there mid-July. You won't have any problem at Mt Rushmore as it is all paved with either concrete or blacktop as far as surface goes. They have several parking areas, with a handicap sticker they should put you close to the entrance. If they don't it will be a long uphill to get to the entrance (I want to say it was between a 1/4 and 1/2 mile from our parking spot to the viewing area. We did not go on the trail to get closer at Mt Rushmore. You could try Keystone but it looked like a typical tourist trap as we drove through. We stayed at Holy Smoke campground. Full hookups but that was it. Not really much there. (edit: all gravel at the campground) Devil's Tower has rv parking along the side of the road. There was a ranger making sure only rv's parked in those spots but depending on how busy it is you may have a long way (1/2 mile) to get to the main visitor's center. There was a concrete sidewalk to get you to the visitors center. The trail to get closer to Devil's Tower is all blacktop if I'm remembering correctly. You only have about 1/8 of a mile from the visitors center to the debris pile at the bottom but it is uphill again. There is a KOA at the entrance where we stayed. Sites are pretty close but there was room and lots of grass. Expensive but convenient and they show Close Encounters every night. (edit: forgot to mention that the driving surface is all gravel at the KOA so that might be an issue for you) We did not stop at Crazy Horse. Enjoy your trip.Re: First mountain coming upIt's done. I didn't worry about traffic behind me. Going up the tow mode seemed to do a good job and we pulled over at 2 view points to let traffic by going up. Downhill was another matter. Tried to let towmode do the job and when I knew a peak was coming let the upgrade kill my speed. Think I still used the brakes too much, didn't seem like tow mode was slowing me down. Used brakes to get me 15-20 under then coast again. We are through. Didn't yell at son too much to be quiet.Re: First mountain coming upOk. Thanks everyone.Re: First mountain coming up2012 Coachmen Freelander. Looks like a chevy 4500?Re: First mountain coming upYes. It has tow haul mode. Turn it on? And shift down means go from 6 to 5/4/3/2/1. Correct?First mountain coming upWill be hittin g the Bighorns soon and am still a bit confused about gears. I'm in a class c gas and it has a way to shift into m1 to m6. Owner said to keep it around 2500 rpm. So going uphill do I shift down from m6 to a lower gear m5/4/3/2/1 and the reverse it going downhill (shift up to 2/3/4/5/6)? Sorry, been manual transmission in a car my whole life. Will be going eastbound on 16 through the Bighorns. Thanks
