Good Question. I also blow the hose and filter out and then screw the other end of the hose to the filter housing so it's all sealed. No water dripping and no bugs in the hose. We don't drink the water.

Turn mine on when we set up and turn it off when we hit the road. The pump is loud enough to hear, even at night when it kicks on. If it kicks on and no one is using water then look for the cause.
