I have a 2012 2500HD diesel and I wouldn't hesitate to tow that with my truck, but I would use a good WDH for ride comfort, and replace the factory shocks with Bilstein if they are over 3 years old. The factory GM shocks last about as long as a set of tires. I tow a 6k trailer with mine and it really doesn't break a sweat, but I do use a wdh to keep it from porpoising over rough roads. I thought I wanted a 5th wheel but with 2 kids and 2 dogs the bed space on the truck gets used up. Factory tow rating for bumper pull on a crew cab 2500HD with a Duramax is around 13500 lbs.339Views0likes0CommentsRe: solar
I live in the PNW and have 100W and 2 2GC batteries. My use case is 3 day trips dry camping throughout the year and one or two extended trips where I either have shore power or the truck alternator to charge. This works ok for me, but the panel won't keep up with daily demand in the winter if I use the furnace or not. The main reason I added the panel was to keep the batteries ready to camp while the trailer is parked, which it does well. It's a good idea to do it anyway so the wheels don't weld themselves to the brake disks and then you can't get them off when it comes time to change a flat. It also gives you a chance to inspect the bearings and calipers. You're greasing the caliper sliders and ball joints regularly, right? Mine still work fine after 7 years of ownership. Every few dumps I fill the tank 3/4 with clean water, and take it for a drive, then dump it. That, combined with using plenty of water, Kirkland toilet paper, and Happy Camper, no issues with the sensors after cleaning. I see people towing similar rigs all the time, but if you are going to do it, I would at least put LT tires on it an invest in a good anti away setup. The biggest danger on the mountains is having to stop hard on a curvy downhill grade, and good sway control and stiff sidewall tires can be the difference between safety stopping and being pushed into incoming traffic. I think you can make that rig fairly safe with the right setup, but you will have a much more comfortable experience with a 2500.4.9KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Trailer brakes weak, a few questions:
It is very likely that they do need adjustment. They significantly loose mechanical advantage between the actuation magnet and the shoes when they have too much clearance. They adjust exactly like you say. I recommend replacing the bearing seals while you are in there. It's pretty easy work but quite messy.295Views0likes0CommentsRe: Stoped routine

The basic OBD code readers can only get to the ECU. The other modules like ABS and Body Control require manufacturer specific protocols that your typical AutoZone reader can't get to. If you don't want to go to the dealership I would go to a diesel shop at least. Maybe first check the rear wheel sensors, I hear that wheel bearing and brake rotor wear will affect them.519Views0likes0Comments
