He then gave 10% discount as a new customer. packed up a catalog to go with me. he saved me several dollars and built some confidence that a place in town knew what they were talking about......and wanted to treat the customer right. they have my business from now on. for this 62 year old it was nice to have a very helpful person in the parts area.intromy wife and are in Tulsa, Ok We have owned cabover campers in the 70's. a pop up in the 80's. we gave up camping for many years. in the past 5 years, we again camped with a tent or to sleep in the back of the truck under a topper. We did camp out for up to 5 days. we decided to look for a travel trailer for when we retire. that is a few years away. looked on craigslist a few months ago to find a travel trailer that was about 6 years old. the driver's side front corner had some rot. the price was about 1/2 of kelly blue book - bottom price. it has taken a few months but the repairs are almost done. i peeled back the rubber roof. i had to remove an area approx 12*16 inches of plywood. added a couple of 1*'s to make a better connection to the plywood.... fiber glassed the entire area ..... this is after letting it dry for a month. in the 2 areas where the 'wall paper" bubbled, i removed this to gain access. I made 2 cork boards to cover the areas .... about 10*12 and 11*17". to get the roof back, i removed a few trim screws and i ended up pulling the front corner trim off to inspect everything. replaced teh trim with " mastic" under it. the issue was the radio antenna .... we just removed it and placed rubber rook patch over the top. this weekend we used dicor sealer over the areas and did touch up over old as required. we replaced the stove vent and bathroom went. bought a new battery, and a few accessories. we did also have a carport installed to park it under. I have hauled in buckets of gravel to cover 80% of the ground so far. still to reinstall the trim that slides in the track of the rails. only other thing is to repack the wheel bearings and wire lights , etc to truck. we had the pots, pan, towels, etc form the tent camping so we are about ready to go. the repairs, etc have been really inexpensive just labor intensive. camper manufacturers should make trailers betters so water damage does not create the issues that it does.... luan plywood .... geeze - cheap crap. our trailer has many aluminum braces vs wood. from what i have read, this is not the norm. ir does have chip board in the front corner. again geeze. the vents that had to be replaced were std PVC .... so UV light degraded these. a few cents more to use a better material. all in all, i am happy but tearing into the trailer made me realize how poorly designed a trailer can be and how much better a few extra things could make these. all said, we will be camping soon. AC, stove, oven, lights, heater, outside shower and a microwave what else could a guy ask for. I don't plan on using the hot water tank or inside bat other that to urinate in. they do cram a lot of stuff in a 16 foot trailer., we got into the whole thing for less than $5k .... that includes the carport. hi to allsun valley 160 extremei am new to forum we recently purchased a sun valley extreme 160 2006 year. it has rot in an area about 1 *2 feet on the roof. the previous owner bought new trailer - much larger. He priced it right and made sure i knew of any issues. i will take time and fix it right. we moved our camping goods inside so far. we repaired a couple of minor things such as cabinet latches and replaced the smoke and co2 detectors. scrubbed all surfaces. does anyone know where we can get an owner's manual for the trailer and all of the appliances? the prior owner ran through everything and demod it but it has ran together to some degree ..... the trailer has a good lay out for the two of us. i will start on the rot repairs in hte next weeks. the framing is solid only the roof in this small area it is a cheap plywood. trying to figure out the rubber roof. the radio antenna's base is literally covered with 1/2 inch plus of a hardened caulk / sealer. need to know how to remove? ot is adhered very well to the roof. i do not know if he ever sealed it or not. the rot reached to the connection of the front panels to the roof. i disassembled enough to ensure that the rot was not in a larger area. considering using a sealer / coating to the entire roof after i am though with rot issues. i read that they extend the life of the roof..... does the coating fill any small holes that would be in the roof or just protect the roof top? just starting with a travel trailer any help would be appreciated.
