Rescues and shelters certainly can use the help and unselfish of you to be willing to give of yourself to Old Fella and to the shelters and rescues. I commend you for what you are doing.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}It's been nice reading about Old Fella and everyone's interest in him. He's certainly a lucky guy to have found you and everyone in this group who so generously helped with his medical care. He certainly has become quite the poster dog for dog rescue. Now that your planning on writing a book about you and Old Fella are the proceeds from the sale of the book going to be donated to local dog rescues to help other dogs who are less fortunate? Rescue is hard work, not cheap (as you now know) and there are never enough funds to help the dogs in need. Old Fella is just a VERY small sample of what comes across the doorsteps of rescue groups around the country and they certainly could use the help! I volunteer for a rescue and I can't tell you how many dogs are brought in or taken out of horrible circumstances often in far worse condition than Old Fella. The cost to care for a rescue is high and most rescues rely solely on donations. Sometimes due to lack of funds, they are euthanized because there isn't any funding to help with the medical care needed for some of these poor dogs. How nice it would be for Old Fella's story to help other dogs in need who are less fortunate.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}I have been involved in Pet Therapy (training, evaluating, etc) for about 5 years and I always say that if people could act more like dogs this would be a far better world. They don't care what color your skin is, they don't care if you are rich or poor, they don't care if your fat or skinny. If we could all just learn from their unconditional love, their non-judgemental behavior, their devotion and forgivenes this truely would be a better place to live. But we don't seem to learn from the greatest of teachers...the animals!Re: CELL PHONE INTERNET ACCESSYou can get the EDGE technology from T-Mobile, Verizon or Cingular and you don't have to buy their pc card. You can buy a sony ericsson GC83 with EDGE technology on Ebay. You just have to search for one that says UNLOCKED. We just got ours and signed up with T-Mobile. Their plan is only $29.95 and you get unlimited minutes. They also just got EDGE technology. You will get the faster service in areas where they have the EDGE already up and running, where it's not it will be comparable to dial up. T-mobile does not currently sell a pc card that has EDGE technology so you have to buy it elsewhere. The sales people in their stores can set your pc card up with a SIM card and your good to go. Just make sure that if you order on ebay that it says it's UNLOCKED. We bought it from sunsunsun and got it yesterday. Last night we were surfing the net at faster speed than our desk top which is still on dial up. Seems to work great so far.Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}I too have been following this but not posted. I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason. Some higher being brought you two together for a reason. It wasn't a coincidence! It's apparent in all of your messages and most assuredly in the photos that there is a bond there than you cannot break. You need each other and perhaps the reason might not be clear now, but it will. I don't think that you can or should put this guy up for adoption. He belongs with you. And perhaps you should still write that story for the newspaper but be sure the ending is about how this old fella has found his new "forever home" with his new best friend! You two are going to build a very strong bond together. He knows what you have done for him and he will never forget! NedraRe: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}I didn't mean to get people riled up but my friend works for PETA and although I have not had time to search their site thoroughly today and unfortunately my computer at work is not letting me get into the individual articles regarding Katrina, but there is information regarding their involvement with Katrina on their website. Since this "rancher" has horses I thought perhaps it would be worth reporting possible neglect/abuse to them since there are no local agencies that can get involved. It was only a suggestion and not one to raise a heated debate or get people so riled up over PETA and it's pros and cons. As for employees being indicted for animal abuse, well that happens everywhere, not just with PETA. We have the same thing going on here at Wolf Haven, which is a "legit" rescue for wolves here in Washington and these were not just two employees, it was people higher up the ladder. So, please, let's not get in a an argument over how bad PETA is. PETA is not a rescue, nor is it's focus on companion animals, that is true, but my question is, have you actually talked to these other organizations about PETA's involvement or lack of involvement? Do you know for a fact that they have done nothing to help out in this crisis?Re: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}I've been following this thread but not posted. I must say that what you have done for this little guy is wonderful. I still find it hard to believe the number of people who think that dogs are "property" and to be treated as such. The fact that they do not provide proper health care and shelter is apalling. Perhaps you might contact PETA (people for ethical treatment of animals) at PETA and see if they can do something. THey are a pretty radical group, but do get things done. Perhaps it might shake him up enough to get his act together. It would be a shame if this man treated his horses the way he treated that poor dog. It would also be a shame if he got another dog and did the same thing. Nedra
