We rented a camper van, most are diesel which is good there. It was a Mercedes camper much like the ones here but kinda stripped of luxury items. No problem though. We had it for a full 3 weeks and it cost about $4500 dollars, so not cheap. I would suggest getting one that you don't have to make the bed down every night and then put it up in the morning to have a table. (from experience) Lots of choices, as seems like soon as you leave Auckland every other vehicle you meet on the road is a campervan rental. Here is a link to check out rentals.... https://campers.vroomvroomvroom.comRe: 1997 mechanical Cummins 8.3L Boost questionIvylog thanks for your comments You may be confused because the quote you posted "And reasonably low boost at cruising speed no uphill grades" was from Brett not me. What I said was : "On a test drive it did not show much boost till the RPMs got up to around 1600. and then was only around 12psi Later I posted , "I am mainly concerned at the lower rpms as it doesn't show any boost while cruising on flat ground at approx 1100 rpm." I do get good mileage from 8 to 9 mpg towing (only 32' long coach) had it since 2010 and always wondered about the puffs of smoke when stepping on it. And of course like many, I'm always looking for more power... :)Re: 1997 mechanical Cummins 8.3L Boost questionThanks Brett Ran the rpms to 2300, this gauge has a recall switch to check the max boost, that is where I got the 2200 psi from. So yes I had it floored but not at the redline of 2550 rpms (on my gauge). I am mainly concerned at the lower rpms as it doesn't show any boost while cruising on flat ground at approx 1100 rpm. Thanks again I always appreciate your comments, I'll check with Cummins.1997 mechanical Cummins 8.3L Boost questionMy 1997 Country Coach did not have a boost gauge and I have been wondering when the turbo should start showing boost. Over the weekend I installed a "Glow Shift" boost gauge. On a test drive it did not show much boost till the RPMs got up to around 1600. and then was only around 12psi till the engine got up around 2000 rpms them it showed about 20 psi with a max of 22 psi. My concern is that the wastegate may not be closing all the way as it will blow a bit of black smoke in the lower rpms when accelerating till the turbo ramps up. I have had the wastegate actuator off and tested at a turbo shop and it functions normally. All comments right or wrong welcome... :) Thanks WayneRe: Tachometer has stopped working Safari Sahara DieselYou may have to go to Freightliner, it was considered a chassi part installed after the delivery...Re: Tachometer has stopped working Safari Sahara DieselMy 97 Country Coach did that last year. Mine is and 8.3L but may be the same problem. I took my sensor off the flywheel housing (2 wires) took it to Freightliner and they knew immediately what it was. about a $50-60 dollar part and back in operation.Outside camping lightsCampers, Please turn off your outside lights when you go to bed as a courtesy to other campers who would like to sleep with the windows open.Re: 6 speed auto transmission Allison with 8.3 CumminsOn your heating issue, you may have a booster pump that is not functioning. On my 97 model Country Coach, it is located on the inside of the frame Drivers side, about as far back as the driveshaft location. just a 12V source and ground wire.Re: Site glass for coolant tank on 1997 Country CoachThanks guys....
