All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Roll Call Alaska 2013The adventure has started for us. We're on the road north, albeit the first leg was only from Tallahassee, FL to Atlanta. The vet has been treating our baby (Misty, a 15-month-old chihuahua) for tonsillitis the last couple weeks so we decided to get an "expert" opinion from my nephew who has an animal hospital in the Atlanta area. He's given Misty the thumbs up for travel, so now we'll spend the rest of the weekend here, a day or two in Cleveland, TN visiting relatives, then begin working our way northwest. We've had nothing but rain since arriving in Atlanta, but who cares; we're going to ALASKA. My wife and I are minority Floridians (LOL... actually born and lived out entire lives there), so if we encounter snow along the way it will be just fine. We'll just turn up the thermostat and enjoy it. We still plan to reach Alaska around the first of June, and if it's later than that it'll just mean we've been enjoying ourselves along the way. Got our Alaska Roll Call signs in the fifth-wheel and pickup windows and hope to cross paths with some of you along the way. Everyone stay safe.Re: Roll Call Alaska 2013This is directed to Alaska Dennis: We plan to spend a good bit of time around Homer. Would love to see your must see suggestions. After seeing an article on the shop my mouth has been watering for pastries from Two Sisters Bakery. LOL Are they as good as they look in the photos?Re: Roll Call Alaska 2013Good deal, thanks for the info. One less thing to worry about. Wow, a long trip like this takes a lot of planning. We're slowly getting there; glad we started early. I was very interested in the discussion about hardware cloth. I've been looking at grille guards for my F350 but now I'm gonna seriously look at the hardware cloth; it sure would be less expensive. One other question for all you fivers out there who have pulled your unit to Alaska: what do you recommend for protecting the front of the camper from gravel?Re: Roll Call Alaska 2013I have a question regarding the medical report one needs in order to take their pet to Alaska with them. Since the certificate of health should be dated with 30 days of the date you enter Canada, what it required for your return trip if you're going to be in Alaska for more than 30 days? Do you need to get a new certificate from a vet in Alaska before the return trip through Canada?Re: Roll Call Alaska 2013Called State Farm about getting a "Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Card" for our truck. Was told I don't need one because State Farm writes insurance policies in Canada and the U.S. Just to be safe, I also contacted my carrier for the fifth-wheel insurance. And, as I thought, auto liability insurance isn't needed for the RV since it is non-motorized. The trailer is considered an adjunct to the tow vehicle, therefore is covered by its liability insurance.Re: Roll Call Alaska 2013You can add another Florida couple to the Alaska Roll Call. My wife and I -- and Misty, our navigator -- will be leaving Tallahassee the first week of May, stopping first for a week or so at Glacier NP and reaching Alaska by early June. We hope to stay long enough to see the landscape turn white. We've been to Alaska a couple times, but this will be our first time RVing. We've got no agenda except to stop and take in anything we find that piques our interest. We do plan to fly the grandkids up after school is out and let them experience the mountains, glaciers and wildlife. I retired last year (my wife in 2009) and have been boning up on everything Alaska for months. With that said, it's amazing how much I've learned from folks participating in this thread. I've ordered the 2013 Milepost, Church's Travel Guide, Ron Dalby's Guide to the Alaska Highway, and I'll be ordering the Toursaver Coupon Book soon. We can't wait to get started.
