I never heard of lubing landing gears! :RRe: DRW vs. SRW for towing fiversThis is getting monotonous, crazy boring. Some people like SRW, others DRW. It's like toothpaste, Crest or Colgate. To each his own. I like Crest ....because: "Crest has been shown to be an effective decay-preventing dentifrice that can be of significant value when used in a conscientiously applied program of oral hygiene and regular professional care." As a world famous person recently said. "What difference does it make?" :SRe: Rim and Tire QuestionAs I mentioned above (and another poster also), you can use LT 235/85/R16E tires on your 6 inch rims. They are just a little larger in diameter. As mentioned, measure distance from center to center and see if you have enough clearance between the tires.Re: Rim and Tire QuestionWhy not use LT 235/85 R16 ? here's a tire size calculator: http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator rim section sidewall size width width height diameter circum revs/mi ST 235/80/R16E 6 9.25 7.4 30.8 97.77 654.74 LT 235/85/R16E 6 9.25 7.86 31.73 99.68 635.65 Rating ST 235/80/R16 3420 lbs (E rating) Rating LT 235/85/R16 3042 lbs (E rating) Lower rating for LT 235/85/R16E is not an issue for me. CAT scales with rig fully loaded revealed: Trailer weight: 9,860 lbs. Pin weight: 1,880 lbs. Trailer Axle wt: 7,980 lbs. 4 tires @ 3042 = 12,168 lbs. Trailer GAWR(each) 10,400 lbs (2 x 5,200) Tire safety margin: 4,188 lbs. (12,168 - 7,980) Axle safety margin: 2,420 lbs. (10,400 - 7,980 Tires are rated higher than GAWR This seems ok for me. Figure what works for you. You may be able to use the same rims if weights allow.Re: Trouble Opening 5th Wheel Trailer HitchChock the 5er's wheels. Lower (extend) the 5er landing gear so kingpin is in the middle. (no trailer weight on hitch plate) Put the truck in Park gear. Release the truck's parking brake. The tow vehicle will move either forward or backward a tiny bit and remove any binding on the kingpin. At this point, you can set the parking break again. Pull the jaw release handle and drive away! Don't forget to unplug the power cord from the truck. :)Re: Why are rear kitchens not so popular?Thought I was the only one here that had a few problems with a rear kitchen 5er. Did a search and found I'm not alone. We still love the RK, after beefing up some cabinet shelves and epoxying our refrigerator shelves in a few places. Other's who had problems: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26792204/gotomsg/26792310.cfm#26792310 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26792204/gotomsg/26792430.cfm#26792430 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26792204/gotomsg/26792583.cfm#26792583 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26792204/gotomsg/26796392.cfm#26796392 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/26792204/gotomsg/26797918.cfm#26797918 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25904665/gotomsg/25912072.cfm#25912072Re: Why are rear kitchens not so popular? It seems my rear kitchen problems with shelves breaking and things jostling is in the minority here. I mentioned that we have 16 inch wheels with the Equa-Flex Trail-Aire shock absorber system. We also have our fresh water tank in the rear and I usually travel with the tank full. Is this a bad idea? Does a full rear water tank enter into the bouncing equation? Are Equa-Flex Trail-Air shocks crummy? What shock system do all the people have that say they have no problems with their rear kitchen?Re: Why are rear kitchens not so popular?2010 Keystone Cougar 292RKSRe: Why are rear kitchens not so popular? We have a rear kitchen. Our pantry cabinet had a bunch of cans in it and it collapsed. We had to reattach the shelf and add cleats with screws and epoxy. It will withstand anything now. Another shelf under the sink dropped also. We had to add cleats and epoxy once again. Our refrigerator had a couple of molded holders in the door break from soda cans. We do not use glass, only plastic cups and dishes, or paper plates in our cupboards. We put only light things in the refridge now when traveling. Heavy cold items go into a picnic ice box till we get to our destination, then transfer to the trailer's refrigerator. Heavy cans and other heavy items stay in boxes on the floor and then are put up in cabinets at the campsite. We still love the rear kitchen, just have to take extra precautions. We have 16 inch wheels with Equa-Flex Trail-Aire shock absorber system. It's as nice a ride as it's going to get. We don't notice any bouncing when driving, but there is a whole lot of shaking going on back there. It can be managed well after you get more experience and are more familiar with your rig. The wife loves the rear kitchen. With all the counter and cupboard space, it leaves the rest of the trailer open to couches, chairs and entertaining. We are very happy with the arrangement. What do full timers do when too old to drive the rig?If you sell your stick house and full time, what happens when you are too old to drive the rig? Rent an apartment? Move into an old folks home? This is why we are keeping our stick house and taking trips in our 5er when we feel like it. Don't want to give up our house. We love where we live in Colorado. We wish to live out our lives in our beautiful home, not cash in, live like gypsies traveling full time in a trailer that will depreciate and become a burden later. I know some are not in a financial state to keep both home and trailer, but if you can afford to keep your house in your retirement, why sell it and full time? What are your thoughts?
