Comming down from Mt lemon monday( 9,157 ft according to the sticker we got) we get to the first stop sign at the bottom and noticed a loud rattling noise as we pulled away.. first though was i had dropped a tail pipe. sounded just like we were dragging tin cans.. we pulled over and quick look showed nothing dragging, just then GF sees smoke comming from the pass side front wheel well. quite a bit of white smoke. that went from a Hmmm moment to a OH **** real quick. i grabbed the extinguisher and dove under the front end but no fire just white smoke pouring out of the wheel. brakes and lines seemed fine..could even touch caliper. back to HMMMMM. i popped the hub cap off and found the problem. the dust cap had popped off and was rattling around in the hub cap...looks like i smoked the front bearing. as we sit there wondering about towing options vs changing bearing on side of road at 4pm i see there is still grease in and on the spindle and bearing..no chunks i can see and wheel doesnt rock just that the hub is about 8 million degrees. anyway...i pull out the 8 ton bottle jack that came with the rig when we bought it, to jack tire up and see how bad bearing really is and of course it doesnt work.( see i got to the thread title :). in the end we waited an hour then took the back roads slow and easy the 30 miles home. the old girl got us home. so what is everyone using on there older rigs for a jack?. is an 8ton bottle overkill? 2 ton floor jack not enough? im around 7000lbs last time i went over a scale. havent done a front/ back yet. all 4 wheels are getting new bearings this weekend... they are probably stock 20 yrs+ now. thanks.Re: How good are your brakes ??living south of tucson we see these everyday heading for mexico. its amazing how little we see littering the freeway. ive talked to a few of them over the years and 99% they resell down south. they hit the local swapmeets, buy up all the bikes matreses, washer/dryers etc. weve seen them spend up to 4 hrs packing loads like that...they get real good at it...was told if they get caught loosing a load they loose thier permit to cross.Re: Tire Surprisehappened to me a few weeks ago...the az sun can do strange things Re: What Did You Do To Your Class B Today ?decided to rearrange and rewire my battery setup Re: anyone have this happen?im going to put the continental kit back on with the new spare..im guessing the metal ring will do a better job of keeping the elements off..Re: What do you tow with your B?we pulled a 5x8 uhall 2400 miles helping one of the kids move and our 94 pleasureway with the 318 averaged 15 mpg and i never really felt it back there and we regularly tote around a 4x8 utility trailer i use as a pickup bed for wood trash halls etc. ive had the same thought of taking more room with us when we travel, but in the end for us driving a 20 foot van and a 10-15 foot trailer limits where and when i can pull over or into something...at least most of the time.Re: anyone have this happen?date code says 0711 but closer look says rot...a few cracks away from blow area. i havent had to change a tire on one of my own vehicals in probably 15 years..i never think about it. had the rv almost 2 years and only glanced at it when i took the metal ring cover off when purchaed...i know better now. that tire wasnt even rated to be put on the rv when new...Re: anyone have this happen?if id had the original metal ring cover on there i would have never figured this out untill i needed it lol. i have a heavy duty air pump so i usually keep my spares 40 lbs or so. admittedly i havent checked that in 6 months or so..one of my faillings.
