I believe Magnatek was one of them. They just charge at a fixed rate and never stop as long as they are plugged in. That can cause the acid it the battery to boil out. The newer units with smart charges mostly avoid this issue. Look and see what brand convertor you have and replace if needed so you don't cook your new batteries.Re: Alaska advice Siletzspey wrote: valhalla360 wrote: Actually since the OP is asking on the truck camper section, price might not be too bad. It's for a big RV where the ferry prices get kind of crazy. Following up on valhalla360's comment... Do the ferries charge extra for an "RV", and is a truck camper considered an "RV"? The web-site for the Bellingham WA > Valdez AK ferry among others makes it hard to find the answer and costs :-( --tg Fee is all based upon total length and on a very few ferries height. Easier to book a TC as an RV and its length. If you try to do a truck they want to know the year/make/model to get the length and harder to add additional for any camper rear overhang. I book every year as a 25' RV. Since propane is turned off you might have refrigeration issues for multi-day ferry rides.Re: Alaska adviceYou'll be into the winter schedule in October and the service becomes very spotty. The only way to bypass Canada is to take the cross gulf ferry from Juneau to Whittier or Homer but I don't think it runs on the winter schedule, at least not often. You really don't want to be on the Gulf of AK during a winter storm. I checked earlier this year and a 25' RV with two seniors and a cabin is just shy of $10,000 round trip Bellingham to Juneau. IIRC round trip Juneau to Whittier as another $6,000 or so. Even if you had money to burn the winter schedule will likely not accommodate your travel. We use the ferry from Juneau to Haines almost every summer since 1987 for a trip to the AK interior. We are able to cross the border in spite of Covid restrictions because we have medical appoints in Anchorage that we cannot get in Juneau. Until they open the border for vacationers I think you are just out of luck now. The AK ferry system is hugely under funded and service has gone down the toliet in the last decade or so. Prices have doubled in that time and is no longer viable for long trips. For our 25' RV with us two Juneau to Haines is 90 miles, 4.5 hours and this summer is $750 round trip. At 25' the price more than doubles the 23' price. There is no logic in that!Re: Poll: How many 1T TC haulers have no modifications?New shocks over the years but all else is stock for the vehicle in my sig. Over GVWR but no handling issues whatsoever in more than 100,000 miles.Re: Honda 2000 compatibiltyI've been carrying my 2000 in the back seat of my truck for 15 years now without any trouble. I take the lid from a 18 gal rubbermaid toughtote and put it on the floor. The gen goes on top of that. If it does leak then the lid catches any drips. They sometimes happen when going to high altitude which forces the carburetor to overflow. Then I take the tub and put it upside down over the gen. Anyone looking in only sees the upside down tub.Re: Caulking downtheroad wrote: Stick with Dicor or Proflex. I'm not a fan of silicone or anything exterior on any RV. If you use Proflex be sure it is Proflex-RV. Regular Proflex dries tacky and will collect dirt that is hard to remove.Re: LP Detector K Mac wrote: I'm in need of a new LP detector to replace my Safe T Alert 40-442P. My friend got a new one that mfg. date was 2 yrs.old when he received it, so on a 5 yr. life he's already down to 3. Where have you gone via. the net. to avoid this from happening ? Also have any of you gone the LP/CO2 combo and are happy enough to recommend one or just the LP model. TIA K-Mac. As far as I have been able to find out for the MTI units the internal 5yr clock doesn't start until the first time power is applied to the detector and I also believe there is an internal battery for the 5yr timer so pulling the fuse to increase life span doesn't help. If someone still has their old unit they should tear it apart and see if there really is a small coin type battery in there. I do pull my fuse each winter and this summer will be my fifth year so I should know in the next several months what happens. Most of the units have a special alert that indicates your 5yrs is up. Pushing the reset usually gives you 30 days before it can't be reset.Re: What Removes Proflex Sealant? joeshmoe wrote: So I used the CA compliant clear Proflex stuff a couple years ago. I don't recommend it. It turned a dingy color and began pulling away despite prepping the surface. So, there are bits and pieces stuck that won't come off. I'm afraid to use a harsh chemical. Tried denatured alcohol, mineral spirits. I have acetone, but I think it'll dull the fiberglass. Any suggestions? Can't really help with removal question but I do know that Proflex dries and remains a bit sticky which can attract dirt etc over time and is hard to wash out. Proflex RV dries without the stickiness and is what should be used. Go ahead and ask me how I know. ;)Re: Gotta Love Alaska Roads trackhead wrote: I live in Juneau, a geographic island with no roads in or out. Every summer we escape to the road system up north for a few weeks in our truck camper, but sometimes the "roads" are over-rated. This one about sent me home early. Trackhead. I too live in Juneau and since 1987 have spent 1 to 2 months in the interior during the summer/fall. I must say I do not recognize this stretch of road and I've driven on most (but not all) the roads on the highway system. My rig is a bit bigger than yours so this would be slow going for me.Re: Ordering new RamI've seen where some with dual alternators will use one for the truck batteries and one for the camper batteries. If you use 4 or 6 ga wire to the camper it should charge the camper batteries well. Even if you don't do that I see no downside with my dual alternators.
