Have you thought about converting a van? A Capri isn’t much bigger and you could put that money toward the vehicle instead of the truck camper. I dont have the time or knowledge required to do a conversion van and I would like to have a 4x4 vehicle. The conversion vans that are 4x4 are really expensiveRe: Want to drive through Mexico, looking for truck advice jdc1 wrote: It will be VERY hard to find a diesel truck with under 150,000 miles for less than $10,000. You can find plenty of gassers for that, with under 100,000 miles. Campers on mini-trucks do not preform well. Too top heavy and not enough power. What do you mean "mini-trucks" I am looking for a 3/4 to 1 ton truck. Why are the diesels so expensive? I imagine they have just as many issues as the gassers and are more expensive to fix, no?Want to drive through Mexico, looking for truck adviceI dont know a lot about vehicles, esp trucks. I have had 2 class C Chevy RVs that I sold because it seemed like something was always wrong with the chassis. I am looking at buying a 3/4 to 1 ton truck and putting a Capri camper on it. I would like to take an extended trip around Mexico but I want to do some research before I buy the truck. I am looking for something that is under 10k & under 150k miles that will be reliable, and if it does break down its something I can get fixed in Mexico. It seems like Toyota and Nissan are popular down there but here, those trucks arent known for their reliability, are they? I was looking at a 2002 GMC Sierra 3500 Extended but consumer reports says the 2002 Sierra 1500 is not reliable so I dont think the 3500 would be great. Is it harder to get diesel in Mx than it is to get regular gas? Any advice would be appreciated!Re: Owners who rent - How do you handle damages / abandonment? path1 wrote: I have a retired cruise America and became pretty good friends with a guy that was at Corp. You gotta here his stories. I think they get opened ended credit card up to certain amount and some type of insurance after that. I bought one 2 years ago and found a great deal on another this past winter and couldnt pass it up. I thought I could sell my older one quickly alas it did not sell very fast. I put them on Outdoorsy to get some of the $ back and WOW is it popular. The 2008 rented 3x and I had a great experience. Each renter returned it exactly as I gave it to them. I didnt want to put the 2011 up because it was in such perfect condition but since my experience was good I listed it. The first renter for the 2011 had it for a week. They backed into something, breaking a light and the water inlet valve on the first day. They didnt pay attention to my training, and didnt read the manual I wrote and gave them a week in advance and for some reason thought the propane and fresh water were low on the 2nd day so they turned off the propane and left the food to rot in the fridge. THey also barely used any water in the toilet and they used a lot of tp. They seemed to want to completely avoid having to refill anything or dump the tanks. Later they ran into a branch and broke off the antenna, and finally they broke a nob off the kitchen sink claiming that it was "leaking" and somehow the counter became detached slightly from the body of the RV (which I discovered later). 1 day before they were due to return the RV the renter called and asked if I wanted to pick it up early since they were only 2 hours away. Thinking it was because they didnt want to further damage it I agreed even though it was an hour farther than we originally agreed to do the return. Then the renter decided that they should get a refund for the day since I was getting it early. I refused so they decided to keep it. Later in the day, they asked if I could come get it that evening even though I explained earlier I would not be available to get it after 1pm. They claimed that their flight got changed/canceled to an earlier flight in the morning from their evening flight. Since I was unavailable, they abandoned the RV in airport shuttle parking and I was unable to do the walkthrough with them to assess the damages. When I was able to pick the RV up, I checked the propane and fresh water tanks, both were 3/4 full..... Due to the damage to the water inlet valve, I cannot put fresh water in the RV. It is a busy season for repairs and I was not able to get it in the shop for 2 weeks. This fiasco has resulted in me having to cancel someone elses trip that they have had planned for a while (lost that income) which was devastating for me to do to them, and I have had to reject a booking request which would have made me another $1600. Outdoorsy has been awful. They are unavailable, and their support takes more than a day to respond to emails. I wanted to put this on their forum but it looks like since last fall they have disabled any more posts on their forum. The repair guy says that their deposit should cover the repairs and I wont have to file an insurance claim. But the renter is disputing some of the damages, saying they are pre-existing even though the damages are right next to/associated with the damages they admit to causing. So, other owners who rent - how much of a deposit do you ask for? If the renter damages the RV to a point where you cant rent it again until it is fixed, do you have any recourse for lost income? Any experiences with outdoorsy or rvshare or other rental places?Re: Using over the winter - do I need to winterizeThanks RckyMtnVia! I wasnt paying attention to the forecast :( I will probably watch some youtube videos and figure out how to do it myself on Sunday. Nobody mentioned using electrical tape on the pipes or the holding tank heaters. I guess those things arent too popular?Using over the winter - do I need to winterizeHi everybody. I purchased my first motorhome in Aug. Im not sure what to do regarding winterizing it because I would like to use it over the winter. I plan to take a trip around Thanksgiving to AZ, a 2-3 week trip to Southern cali around new years, and a week long trip in March. Do I need to fully winterize and unwinterize the motorhome each time? Is there a way to avoid this? It seems like it would be an expensive thing to have to do and undo multiple times during the winter. I am also concerned about the chemicals - there must be some left after flushing them out - has this ever made anybody sick?Re: Extended warranty - is it worth itI think if you have the $$ to spend and peace of mind has value for you then its worth it. For me, I dont have the extra $ to spend. I have already run into issues with the motorhome, back up lights went out, sewage cap had a leak, link in the bathroom sink, sink doesnt send water to the shower - but these are all things that I think we can fix ourselves. $4 sewer cap, $16 black water valve, $5 box of fuses and probably under $200 for a new sink, sink base, (from home depot) and faucet. Still less than the warranty.Anybody ever removed the bathroom sink?Anybody ever removed the bathroom sink to make the shower bigger? The cheap plastic sink in my motorhome leaks and the water doesnt feed into the shower so It looks like I will need to get it replaced but all of the rv repair ships around are booked until mid September! Just bought this thing and would like to be able to take a shower when we take it on on the weekends so I am considering removing the bathroom sink all together and extending the shower, there is a sink in the kitchen anyways. How difficult would something like this be?Re: Do I need an external surge protector? Other essentials? How do I tell if I need 50 or 30 electrical management system? The specs say my battery converter amps is 55 but I was told its a 30 amp power cord...
