It is amazing what these little terror creatures can do. No nutritional value in half of the things they "eat". Thank goodness they haven't directed their meaningless destruction at my coach. My house on the other hand... Re: Alternate to canvas slide toppers These were discussed extensively on FMCA's forum a while back. They seem like they are solving a problem that doesn't really exist. A good quality slide topper works pretty darn good. If you want to go for the gold and get a great topper look at Girard or ZipDee - they make them however you want - colors, sizes, etc. Re: Brakes The alarm means your primary air system pressure has dropped below a set-point, likely 60 PSI, due to your leak. If it is a hose/line you can "cap-off" upstream of the leak it might be enough of a band-aid to get you to a place where you can fix it properly. I wouldn't recommend doing it if the hose in question leads to a brake, but if it is going to say an air-spring, you can stop the leak so your coach can get up to proper pressure and limp along slowly to the nearest truck shop, etc. I carry an assortment of 3/8", 1/2", and 5/8" DOT caps and plugs (NPT and quick connect) just for this reason. Good luck and stay safe! Re: Genny oil I'd recommend that you check for the required API ratings in your generator manual and then compare to the oil you bought. That should address any concerns that you have. Valvoline's 15W-40 Premium Blue One Solution Gen2 Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oil, for example, is for diesel, gas, and NG engines, and would likely fit the bill if your oil isn't meeting the requirements of your generator. Re: Which roadside assistance is best I've had fantastic luck with CoachNet. It proved its worth on a 5,000 mile road trip last summer laden with bad luck. One tire, one air bag, and one hydraulic hose - all resolved to my satisfaction - especially considering the remote area in the middle of MT we were in when I needed the help. I will say that a large part of that success has to do with the service providers as well. In this event we had great people locally to work with. Re: RV QD 8000 Generator Starts fine but dies in a couple of minutes I had a similar experience a few years ago, not sure if this will apply to you or not. I was performing the annual maintenance on my AquaHot and for one reason or another, decided to start the generator (12500 QD in this case). It would run for a short period (1 - 2 minutes, perhaps) then stop. I restarted it and it repeated the same behavior. I may have done it once more before the real head scratching started. It then occurred to me that it was drawing air from the open end of the filter housing on the AquaHot (as I had the fuel filter off the unit as part of the annual maintenance). I replaced the filter and the "issue" was resolved. Re: 1997 (Monaco) Beaver Brandywine 40M I thought I would add a recent service cost in this post as a good example of what one can expect with older coaches. I've read a lot of similar posts but often the real costs aren't shared. I try and do all work myself (I can control the quality of the parts used and know the work was done right) but sometimes I just don't have the time to do it. Case in point, my drive axle brakes were ready to be replaced. We had a trip coming up and I wasn't able to get in the barn to do the work (something about working full time and having kids...). Hence, I took it to a trusted shop for the work. In the course of the inspection it was also discovered that there was a bad ball joint, a bad inversion valve, a bad delivery valve, and a leaking pressure switch. Just labor was quoted over $7,000. This example was a bit extreme due to the amount of labor it takes to access some of the bad parts, but its worth mentioning as it is in the realm of possibilities. The handful of other times I have had to have someone else do the work it seems I can never get out of the shop for under $2,000 in labor, plus parts which can get expensive on these heavy chassis. Enjoy that new truck! Re: 1997 (Monaco) Beaver Brandywine 40M I don't have any direct experience with Monacos or Beavers, but have the same understanding of the quality during that time period as you do. I do however, have experience with owning an older, yet high quality coach. The few pieces of advice I would offer are: Parts and information: Obviously, with it encroaching on 30 years old, some parts, mostly electronics, will be hard(er) to find. Records, schematics, etc., may be hard to come across as well, complicating troubleshooting, etc., when something goes wrong Repairs: Getting to this age, certain parts will just start to wear out, and they can be the expensive ones, either in cost or labor (air bags, hydraulic hoses, etc.) Labor: Given the above points, someone will need to work on it. If it is well taken care of and you keep after things as they break, it won't get too bad too often, but just prepare yourself. It will either be your time or your money. All of that aside, I think owning an older, high-quality coach is a great thing. A well cared for one, to boot, sure makes it cool. Re: Interstate 15 If you subscribe to RV Life and use their trip wizard, it has a really cool feature that shows the elevation and grade across your entire route. That can also give you a good idea of what to expect. You'll know if you have a 6,000 ft. gain over the course of a relatively short period of time, for example. Here s is an example of an upcoming trip I have out west. Re: Battery isolator/separator breakdown As with any component, it can certainly have a failure of some type. Depending on the make and model of the isolator, I'd check with the manufacturer for troubleshooting instructions. Intellitec has good guides on it's website, for example, if that happens to be who made yours.
