There is a couple that have a YouTube blog that have had different RVs. They now have a Ram 5500 converted to SRW with a Bigfoot camper. He found the truck already converted from the oil fields in Alaska. They give a thorough review and he’s pretty talented with the systems. Thanks for the replies. I’m looking to stay away from the newer diesels for simplicity and the complexity of the newer emissions. I like the fact the Chevy 6.0 has been around a long time and seems to be very reliable. I’ve always heard about the better leg room but since I always drove never really thought about it. However, riding passenger in my Brothers class C I quickly realized the issue. Could not get comfortable on the passenger side. I’m in the market for a small class c, preferably a Forest River 23-24’ models. I plan to put in a lot of miles and flat tow a vehicle so power and mpg are important as well as solid reliability. I’ve had the V10 and was happy. I would like the new Ford 7.3 but can get better deals on the Chevy 6.0 which I believe is a solid motor and probably better mpg. A lot of good info by other members so I won’t repeat it. If you don’t want to remove the lift I would focus on the tires. If you have a large soft sidewall tire like a C or D rated you can improve your setup. I would go back to stock size (275 or 285 /70/17) on the factory wheel or equivalent. You can also get some better tires with a stiff sidewall and way more capacity than many big tires used on lifted trucks. The right tire will make a HUGE difference in stability. Main difference is a wooden frame in the 1161 vs aluminum in the 1191. 1191 has bigger holding tanks and basement storage. Get the 1191. I had a 2005 and thought it was a great camper. Later models increased length to 11’11” from 11’6” and you could get a rear fold tent option.666Views0likes0CommentsSlide out to non slide
Has anyone gone from a slide out TC to non slide and if so what are your thoughts and any regrets? I just sold a nice Arctic Fox 990 with full wall slide and generator. I was impressed with the quality and comfort but I tend to travel more and only spend a short time in a location. The slide gives a lot of room when parked but as quick as it is to open the slide out at rest stops and pulling into a spot to spend the night when traveling, it was more of a hassle then just opening the door and climbing in. Also, have to consider being level and possibly opening the slide into an obstruction. I’m also thinking a better battery/solar system over the generator is a better option. I have a Honda 2000 if needed. I love the convenience of a TC and the fact I have a 4x4 Diesel truck to drive makes it so versatile. I’m now looking at an Arctic Fox 865 which is similar to the 990 minus the slide and generator. It will probably be about 500 lb less, 7” shorter and a better C/G. It still has the quality and amenities of the 990 with a little less space when the slide is out, less tank capacity and no gen. I also like the cabinet storage above the dinette with the non slide. There is also the consideration about structural integrity and moving parts on the slide, less space to heat/cool and dust/water intrusion.
