I have had 2 mhs, 2 5th wheels, 4 TTs. I find what works best for me is my 30 ft 5th wheel w/ one slide. And very few automatic things to go wrong. And finding a used high quality well maintained rig. Happy Trails Yep - which is why I have a LQ horse trailer. All channel lock aluminum and built to take a beating.Re: Thought about switching to a motorhome Deb and Ed M wrote: RWjSIM2003 wrote: I also like the ability to pull over and take a rest with out getting out of the truck and getting in the trailer. Safe Travels Speaking as someone who was stuck for hours in traffic during a N Georgia snowstorm, towing the 5er which was winterized for our trip back home.... the ability to use the potty (or get a beverage or snack) in a traffic snarl is priceless! I keep waiting for someone to post on RV.net "We were stuck in traffic, and this old lady gets out of the truck, leaves the door open, faces the back of the truck - and I know what she was doing!!" Right THEN - I was wishing we were driving our Class C..... I was in the I85 traffic jam heading south to Atlanta. I got out of my seat and went into the head, flushed and got back into the drivers seat. After five hours of going absolutely no where, we decided to put the chains on the tractor. After we did that, we climbed several hills up to I20 and went west until we got off the ice.Re: Truck Tonnage? avvidclif1 wrote: But leave me tell you, when you get a deuce n half stuck you better start looking for a BIG wrecker. And they will get stuck, been there, done that, courtesy of Uncle Sam. I can air down the tires for sand and refill them when I get back onto the pavement. Betcha you can't do that!:DRe: Truck Tonnage?I bought an M35 with the 478 cube multifuel and 5sp stick shift for less than $10k about a week ago. The engine was rebuilt sometime in the 80's. I'm going to build a camper on top of the bed. Good to know it will run on virtually anything from kerosene to jet fuel to avgas. Tho with the latter, it needs a quart of 30wt oil every 15 gal to keep the pump lubricated.Re: should have got gas.It burns old D4, D2, ULD, USLD (from 1500ppm to 15ppm) and 20% bio-diesel. That 250k mile engine now has 745k miles on it and I'm putting in a new frame.Re: Tire Air PressureSometimes the door sticker doesn't match the tires that are on the vehicle, which was the case with my 95 Dodge. The door sticker said 245/75R16 @ 55psi. The tires were 235/85R16 @ 80psi - so I ran 65 unloaded and 75 loaded.Re: should have got gas. goducks10 wrote: ghostrider42 wrote: Me Again wrote: Powerdude wrote: Sell it to one of the members, have him start an LLC for $50 bucks, and then lease it from him. Chris It seems to me it would be easier and probably cheaper to find an older truck - one without the def systems. There are plenty of pre-05 trucks out there looking for new homes. That's easy to say, but not everyone wants a 9-10 year old truck with 150,000+ miles on it that has a well used interior, smells like diesel and is noisy. An easy way to get rid of the regens and make the truck more efficient is to do a DPF delete with SIMs. Only cost around $220-250.00 and doesn't require a tuner. Your EVIC may show a code but it can be removed with a code reader that cost $20-30.00. Regens will stop allowing longer oil change intervals. Keep the DPF if the truck is still in warranty. It can be put back on in an hour or two. Ok you spend $50k on a new truck and another $250-300 to do a delete - you still need to buy ULSD fuel. I'll buy a 12V 95-97 Ram with 250,000 miles on it for $9k - and it will burn any kind of diesel and it won't have any electronics on it to go bad. The o/h won't cost but a grand or two and I'll still have a better truck.Re: should have got gas. It's a 10-wheel Autocar, I think a 1965, with a 12V71 Detroit, a 13-speed Road Ranger, and manual steering. That fire-breathing Jimmy will haul the 30-ton truck up hills with the cars. At full power and 2400RPM, the unmuffled 5" stacks drown out the siren, and the truck makes more smoke than the fire. :D When will it go to auction? Might be a good candidate for conversion. Even if you run CNG, you still need diesel (5%).
