All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Under 3500 lbsHello, thank you all for your very valuable and helpful feedback. Joining this site, popupportal and hybrid Facebook page has been very helpful as I worked through this. After much deliberation we are leaning toward a 2013 Jayco X17z with UVW of 3050# and CCC of 450# for a total of 3500#. The explorer has GCWR of 9950, and Payload Capacity of 1558#, and a tow rating of 5000# and hitch weight of 500#. If you include the driver in calculating occupant weight, that is 500# (some say do, some say don't, so being conservative and including), and the hitch at 350#, that leaves 700# in the Explorer and 450# in the Jayco - more than enough wiggle room I believe as we would never load 1,150# of stuff. So all, did I do that right? WDH, 7 prong hitch, brake controller, ASB, etc. So @SoundGuy - do I pass my weight lesson???Re: Similar to your Rig?It’s a v6. Payload is 1558. I’ve done the math. Not much wiggle room. I was really curious if anyone had experience with a similar situation.Re: Similar to your Rig?Hey Chuck 2016 Explorer with class iii tow package. 5000 max tow so all in we are up at the limit.Re: Under 3500 lbsThank you SoundGuy. I’ve got your message loud and clear! I’ve had some great ideas (like one vehicle for gear). I’m gathering information and appreciate yours as much as anyone else’s.Re: Under 3500 lbsThank you all for your help and concern. This started as different posts with different questions. We haven’t purchased anything. There are folks towing this with an Explorer, how comfortable, who knows. We don’t live anywhere near the Rocky Mountains. We have young kids in school and full time jobs. This is for long weekends and likely less than 100 miles (in many cases 30). We are blessed with many great choices nearby. I will continue my homework ( as I understand it, the purpose of this forum).Re: Starcraft, Jayco, Coleman, Viking....OtherThank you sound guy. Being new to the forum I had not seen the small TT section previously, which seems more appropriate to my need.Re: Under 3500 lbs afidel wrote: If the payload is near the top for that year Explorer (1750 pounds) and the kids are smaller then a 3k dry trailer is probably fine. My trailer is just over 3k dry and had 2 bunks and a front full bed with a large dinette on the slide. 4 is very comfortable for us as former tent campers. I'd love a couch but that would have required a bigger tow vehicle. Hello Afidel - what are you towing? and what is your TV? thanksRe: Starcraft, Jayco, Coleman, Viking....OtherThanks all - we have had a 2016 StarCraft 187tb hybrid with 3 tent beds come available in our market - any experience with this?Similar to your Rig?We are looking at a 2016 StarCraft 187tb with our Ford Explorer V6, factory tow package, TV - anyone have success with similar rigs? Anyone have this hybrid - like it? don't like? ThanksRe: Under 3500 lbsThank you all for your replies! You all deduced correctly that the TV has a 5000 lb rating with the factory tow package. I have calculated that 3000 - 3500 pounds, with our young family, will keep us below max. We have had a 2016 StarCraft 187tb come available in our market. I will be looking at it in the next few days and hope it will work out. I also like the larger bunks with the Q murphy bed. I would love to find more folks that have had success with our TV. When the kids get older (and heavier, and want more stuff, and friends) we might be ready to upgrade the TV by then!
