I will be driving Toyota Rav4. Should I be prepared for ice and snow, or it will be all clear? I hope to get some response from people that know that road. Thank you in advance to all. gregnRe: Cel telephone for a few months for a canadianI was thinking around this line as well. But just in case technology changed, I posted my question. Which one you recommend?Cel telephone for a few months for a canadianSo, this is the time to fly again South for the winter. My trivial questions is: - What is the best (and the cheapest) telephone system for a Canadian, while in the USA? We use home telephone while in Canada, and normally have no use for the cel, so therefore we do not have one. But on the road is another story. A couple of winters ago we purchased from Walmart a basic Track 10, or something like that. I'd prefer something with better voice quality, as my hearing is going down the drain. For international calls we use Skype (while connected to internet.) Please advice. Thank you.Re: Advice Please Re San Francisco and LAFor San Francisco I'd stay in Marin RV Park in Larkspur. It is about 25 mins by car to SF, but the best way to travel there is by ferry, or transit. About 10 mins walk to either one that will take you to downtown. Easy and relaxing way to visit SF with RV. Check details on internet. LA is another story. It is a nightmare to drive around and, God forbid, you do not want to take wrong exit there. I'd recommend San Diego instead, where you will find a few nice RV parks. Good luck.Re: Another Arizona in the Winter Query legolas wrote: ...Not trying to be difficult I just don't see any sense in leaving home to go somewhere that I will have to hibernate inside the TT because it's to cold for me to sit outside until midnight, and 40's is to cold for me to sit for 3 or 4 hours in the evening. So, it may be Florida, or it may be that I just hunker down for the winter and continue to visit AZ during August and September. Legolas, it sounds like you made up your mind. August and September have lovely evenings in some parts of Arizona. But most likely, you also have a nice weather in Cleveland during those months. The cigars will taste the same here and there.Re: Rattle snake bite 2gypsies wrote: Were you walking on a trail or off-trail? Or sitting on a rock? Did you see the snake before it struck? Not that it matters - could happen anywhere, but just curious how it happened. Glad you're improving! I stopped momentarily on the trail to look back and see how far back my hiking companion was. I could hear the rattle and instantly felt a bite - as if a dry branch prickled on my leg. I looked down and here it was - a good size snake about 1' away from my foot, happily coiled. I threw a sitting cushion that I carried under my armpit on the top of it and jumped back a few steps to look at the damage done to my leg. I could see three bloody marks about 15" above my foot. Later on the doctors decided that I was bitten twice and that there were four marks. I could recognise only three - the most significant one right on the shin bone of my rather skinny legs. I guess that the snake was resting just on the edge of the Peralta trail - one of the more popular trails in the eastern Phoenix area. I estimate that a hiker, or a group of hikers was walking by that spot about once every fifteen minutes, or so that day.Re: Rattle snake biteThanks to all for the compassionate response. After one week in the hospital and two weeks of intensive physiotherapy I'm back to normal, at least in physical sense. Mentally it is another story. That beautiful snake (most likely Western Diamondback) is on the back of my mind most of the time. That will fade away with time, I'm pretty sure. At the present it feels as I was hit by a stray bullet. By the way, my leg hardly shows any bite marks. I prefer not to discuss financial consequences of the event at this stage. I was insured through a reputable company; presently they are in the process of collecting all the information. With the help of Marshall - my hiking partner, I started to investigate protection measures for the next year's hiking season. Definitely I'll invest in a pair of snake gaiters and solid high boots. I'll have to be careful with taking lunch breaks - sitting on the rocks and so on. I'm still hoping to get in touch with someone that was bitten by the snake to compare the notes and share details. So far - no luck, as if I was the only victim of snake bite. If there is anyone that knows someone - please respond. Interestingly, when I mention about it here at home in Victoria, a typical reaction is as if it was a mosquito bite. I'll post again in a while to let you know about my mental state, and possible side effects of the snake venom and 18 vials of antivenom I received in the hospital. Be careful there!Re: Rattle snake bite molossus wrote: I'm a local snake researcher and would be happy to address any rattlesnake related questions that you have after your experience ....... It looks like a rare, legitimate bite. Molossus, I left private message for you.Re: Rattle snake bite Spleenstomper wrote: Oh come on, you don't get off that easy. Cough up the story. Not a topic for a post and run... Glad you are better. I'd like to hear your insight. Oh no, I'm not planning to run. You will hear the story, just let me mentally recover from the overwhelming mental shock. Physically I'm almost back to normal. I'm pretty sure it was Western Diamondback. Please be patient.Rattle snake biteWell, it happened to me, while on the Peralta trail in Gold Canyon, AZ. After one week in the hospital and two weeks in rehab I'm getting back to normal. Would like to get in touch with anyone that was bitten by a rattler to exchange experiences. Thanks.
