Indiana Highway RV Torture Test
I apologize to any Indianans that might take offense to the following. In my experience, year in and year out, over decades, Indiana has the worst highway to bridge transitions in America. Worse than MI, worse than WI, worse than IL, worse than OH worse than anywhere. It is like the highway engineers do not talk to the bridge engineers and they guess where everything is going to line up. Invariably and without exception, on IN highways north/south bound or east/west bound, the bridge transitions are kidney, truck and trailer pounding rough. The approach to the bridges are designed like giant washboard ripples that get everything oscillating up and down driving the truck/trailer suspension system into the dampers on the frame. Then your momentarily airborne before hitting the bridge and bottoming everything out again. With adrenaline flowing I check the rearview mirror to see if anything major fell off. But before I get my eyes back on the road in front of me there a similar set of undulations before being launched into the air and landing on the highway. After a few hours of this Evel Knievel RVing it is time for an Aleve and to check for equipment failures (broken axles, springs, hangers, bolts or missing accessories from the top of the trailer). Not to mention checking the cabinets and shelves inside the trailer that have come open or failed completely. Come on INDOT, figure this out.4.9KViews1like26CommentsHeber City Utah to Orem, Utah
Does anyone have any experience with Hwy 189 from Heber City to Orem? We have a large, high profile (13’4”) fifth wheel, triple axle. In my RV atlas it isn’t shown as an RV friendly road. We will have to go considerably out of our way to get to I 15 heading down to I 70 if we have to backtrack to the north. If 189 is doable, it would shorten our trip a good deal. Thank you so much in advance.1.7KViews0likes8CommentsImmediate trip home (Salt Lake) from Chicago
Hey all! My son and his dad needed to go to Chicago to say goodbye to someone very close. Well, plans changed and instead of flying, they are now driving. I'm looking for places where they can rest and eat some good things along the way to help strengthen their bond. Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful, thank you!233Views0likes0CommentsHelp trip from Ohio to Yellowstone Mount Rushmore Blackhills
We have multiple families that plan on RV’ing from Dayton Ohio to Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, and the Blackhills in June. I have tried to find someone to design the trip but can’t find travel agents that do this ;) We have never been and plan on taking approx 2 weeks. We plan on driving there as quickly as possible, and taking our time for site seeing once we get there heading through the sites and towards home. Can you please give us ideas on where we should stop 1st, best sites to see, and how many days to see in each? What we absolutely don’t want to miss and if you have suggestions on where to stay “RV parks” along the way etc? We want to see and experience as much as possible. Thank you!!!6.1KViews0likes14CommentsHwy 26 in Oregon?
Next summer we would like to take Hwy 26 in Oregon from Redmond to John Day and then to Baker City on 7 OR better yet continue on Hwy 26 to Payette, ID and on to Boise. How is it for getting diesel along this route? We have a 26 gal diesel tank on F250 towing a 30' fifth wheel. We are wanting to go southeast and get over onto I-84. Never been in this area before. Will avoid SE Oregon since there are hardly any towns to get fuel. THANKS so much in advance for advice.3.2KViews0likes10CommentsOregon 38 and 138
Headed from Reedsport, OR to I-5 on OR 38. Drove this route a few years ago and it was great (and scenic) for towing our 30-foot TT. Does anyone know if OR 138 headed South to Sutherlin is as good a road? It would save us some mileage if we could use it. Any information appreciated. Thanks!1.5KViews0likes10CommentsTrip from NC to SD - Nice Campgrounds on the way
We are planning a trip from Asheville NC to Sturgis SD in June. Using I-40 - 75 - 64 - 65 - 465 - 74 - 80 - 29 - and 90. We have a 34ft Class C flat towing a small car and ideally we would like to do 200 - 250 miles max per day. I assume there are many fellow RVers out there who have used this route and can recommend some nice campgrounds on the way. We are not so much into Walmart or Flying J parking. We'd rather have a nice campsite where we can walk the doggies and enjoy a peaceful evening. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance for your input. BTW: I know there is a shorter Route through Missouri but we did that twice last year and want to see something else.2.4KViews0likes10CommentsI-90 to US 2 in Montana around Flathead Lake?
We're going to be driving Seattle area to Glacier National Park next week with a 30' travel trailer. What's the best route from I-90 to US-2? Is it worth avoiding the stretch of 28 and stay on 200 to 93? Is it better to stay on 93 west of flathead lake or take 35 east of the lake? and, US-93 through Kalispell or 82-35 to get to US 2? Thanks!1.5KViews0likes6Comments
