As far as collecting data goes VW,BMW,MB,AUDI and I bet others have been doing this. Everytime I took my 97 Jetta tdi into the dealer they were required to downloand all info from the ecm and send it to VW.
On the late model cars, especially hybrids, they know how often and hard you sneezed.
