There are plenty of firms doing this and are very successful.

How many buyers keep their phone to the point where wear becomes a problem?
It is obsolete the moment the new model is out and not long after the warranty expires.
Suppose a car maker cut projected life from 15 years to 10 years... would any buyer of new cars care or notice?
FYI, that precise thing was actually done when engineering analysis was done of certain makes... and very quickly... it was concluded it would only last 10 years and not well 15.
Next, the other makes all followed.
Had seen this happen before... look at Mobil 1, who lost a court case over a competitor's inferior product, then went straight ahead and used the same lower cost method.
