Fuel Pressure Modulation.
Can someone tell me if that is done with an active or passive component?
Is it just a mechanical excess pressure bleed off?
Or is it an active part that can be controlled by the ECM to raise or lower pressure?
If it is active --- then another whole avenue --- can there be software errors or glitches in commanding the pressure, and with it... excess pressure... or worse.. waves of insufficient or excess?
This will answer some of your questions.

This should answer some more of your questions on CP4 based pumps.

And I believe CP4 is 3rd gen common rail for Bosch, when gen 2 injectors for solenoid versions, and gen 3 injectors being the piezo inversions. I believe Bosch just cleans and flushes the injectors to reman them to get any potential particles out that don't belong there, concern being a stuck open nozzle on a common rail can flow continously, there is constant fuel pressure in rail, causing burn holes in pistons or worst case, hydrolocking of a cylinder. There are sensors everywhere on this system... sensors on the glow plugs, sensors on the fuel rail, sensors on the HPFP
One more tidbit from Bosch.
