Some fresh facts for you.... Volkswagen of America has quietly been taking fuel samples, a quart at a time, without asking the owner (theft) of every TDI that enters their shop for service... they offer free 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 mile services. They do not request it (the fuel sample) of the owner, they just take the sample, label it, and off it goes, here in the USA.
So I am wondering if Bosch is behind this, or VW? I know Vw want's to get to the root of the problem, they are eating a lot of 8 to $9000 repairs and rental car loaners while the owners car is being fixed. The loaners are getting a heck of a lot of miles racked up while on loan, most TDi owners see 20, 30, maybe 40k miles a year, which is why they buy TDI's, for the high MPG. VW sometimes also eats a car payment to placate the owner for the down time of the car and the inconvenience. You can bet with Vw eating the lions share of this, there have been some very heated meetings and discussions between VW of America and Bosch, as well as FoMoCo and Bosch.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall in one of those meetings.
