I am going to say taking a small fuel sample of a vehicle in for service is legit.
When you go in, the signed authorization will permit that.
No different from down dumping all the data inside the boxes.
And why isn't FoMoCo doing this before their fuel pumps fail? Should not the results be given back to the customer, returned, just like used parts and the diagnosis? You go in with an appointment to see a doctor, they take a blood sample, do they not get back to you with the results from the lab work? Of course they do. Just my humble opinion, but it should be no different. I want the lab results back.
I see it more as VW doing a CYA... "hey, your fuel is bad, we saw this coming, warranty denied..." instead of saying "you need to buy your fuel elsewhere, this fuel in your tank is not up to spec., you need to change your fueling habits, buy the good stuff." It's a marketing mechanism to go further forward so that you have to buy Ford Approved or VW approved, or Bosch approved D2 for your vehicle... just saying...
