NinerBikes, you've hit the nail on the head, as I've lived through that scenario
too many times as an engineering manager, project/program manager chairing design
teams
I've been removed from two large programs after refusing to do something 'El Cheapo'
dictated by my boss..the GM of those divisions.
Took another job at another division. Left many emails outlinging the failure
scenario and about 2 years later my new GM got a nasty gram from my old boss
claiming I screwed up !?!
That old boss/GM's name got onto the French listing of 'jail this #%#$ if they
ever try to enter the country' because the new program manager did as he was
told and the French government didn't like finding fielded equipment non-compliant
to their regulatory rules.
Additionally, think the designers of this system got lost in rat holes as the
various changes came down the pipe. They needed to go back up to see the whole
picture with each change order
Here is a scenario that can happen anywhere on the planet...
A diesel filled with people crossing a train track. It dies from the HPFP spewing
it's guts
That diesel is smack stuck on the tracks as a train is coming down the tracks
Some folks will have the presence of mind to jump out. Some will try to restart
it. Some will freeze. Some might fall and twist an ankle....etc, etc, etc
Or going up hill filled with folks and/or towing....
The HPFP fails and the vehicle and setup also loses braking, as many use hydrobost
assisted brakes
It starts to roll backwards...
