Based on what you are saying, reducing pressure (VW 2012?) is a pretty viable solution.
But that means some of the benefits of high pressure (lower tailpipe emissions treatment needs) is lost.
Technically, it is possible to retrofit for lower pressure by changing the pressure relief valve at the Common Rail, and then reprogramming the emissions to do more frequent regens to deal with higher particulate counts.
However, that would probably mean a new trip to EPA for certification.
I am not sure it can be done as a "running change".
Need a EPA cert expert to chime in.
