Maybe by asking them if they would be willing to give up the dog, they realized they hadn't paid much attention to it. I think the plan should be to every so often ask them again, and then talk with the kids when they are out about animal responsibilities and how happy the dog looked when he was taking the walk, etc. Perhaps that will break the cycle.....
