**** Rt. 58 in Oregon ****

We are staying near Crater Lake on Rt.97. We are heading over to I5 to head for Salem. How is Rt.58 for steep climbs or descents? Someone suggested Rt. 138 instead. Thanks.

  • The Tripcheck notice is:
    ORE58
    MP 56 - 56.2
ORE58, 11 miles East of McCredie Springs
    Estimated delay under 20 minutes
    Maintenance Work

Lanes Affected: (Westbound) 1 Lane (Eastbound) 1 Lane
Comments: Monday to Thursday evening closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. includes holidays. One lane will remain open during the day with up to 20 minute delays. Lane restrictions and nighttime closures at the OR 58: Salt Creek Tunnel have begun. The highway has been reduced to a single lane for two-way traffic during the day time. Flaggers and a pilot car will control travel in alternating directions. Motorists should anticipate delays of 5-20 minutes. The highway will be closed to all traffic in both directions Monday through Thursday nights only between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. There is no local detour available and motorists will need to use an alternate route. There will be no nighttime complete closures from Friday at 6 a.m. until Monday at 8 p.m. during the construction season. The single lane restriction will remain in place during all hours when the tunnel is open.

Project Summary: Built in 1939, the tunnel needs serious repair and the adjacent west half viaduct and the three east viaducts are failing and need to be replaced. The OR 58: Salt Creek Tunnel and Half-Viaduct project will: · Replace the half viaduct west of the tunnel · Replace the three half viaducts east of the tunnel · Repair the tunnel liner · Lower the tunnel floor Construction will take place over two construction seasons in 2012 and 2013.
  • 58 is currently undergoing some major road work, it is closed nights thru September. Might be better off either going west out of Crater Lake and pick up I5 near Roseburg or drive north on 97 to Bend and take 22 west straight into Salem. Salem surely cant be your final destination?
  • Either will do.

The north exit from Crater Lake meets 138 at its high point. 138 east to 97 is a straight gradual down grade. 138 to the north and then west is roughly flat, and then a gradual descent along a major river.

58 from 97 has a slight rise to its pass, and then a gradual descent to the lowlands.
