2015 Trip Planning Question road between Tok and Dawson City

This will be our return trip to Alaska in 2015. This time we want to make sure we see Dawson City. Thinking about leaving the trailer in Tok and driving north to Dawson City for a night, then return to Tok. For you folks who have driven this route just what are the conditions, I think from what I have read that after a distance north you loose the paved road. We have a 4 wheel drive 1 ton truck, can we make it to Dawson City taking our time? I have heard that sometimes buses make this trip, I really don't want to drag the 5th wheel on that type of road. Any comments or suggestions about this? Thanks

  • We drove Top of the World in 2012 in a class A pulling a pick-up with no problems. Dawson City is worth at least three days if you want to experience it all. There is a ton of mining history in the area and even several active mines. We drove from Tok to Dawson City the middle of September. I would recommend doing it in the fall as they work on the road all summer repairing winter damage. Also if you wait until mid September there is a good chance the road will be frozen and you won't have to deal with the dust or the mud. We spent the night in Chicken before leaving early in the morning headed for Dawson City. The border does not open until 8:00 am so if you leave early it cuts down on the traffic you will meet. This is an all day drive for two reasons: gravel road and absolutely beautiful scenery. Another advantage of doing it in the fall is the vegetation will have the post first frost colors. (Brilliant yellows, purples, reds, and greens)
Go slow, enjoy the scenery, sleep in your own bed in Dawson City. It doesn't get any better than that!
  • Done Dawson City to Tok towing the 5er 3 times now. No real issues. A section was real slow this year due to construction but then we are never in a hurry so the trip has never been done in 1 day.

Dawson City is worth at least 3 nights all by itself. How many have taken the trouble to see the steamboat graveyard, driven every street of Dawson City to see all the old homes or been up to the graveyard & walked around? Lowes & Home Depot have nothing on the Dawson City Hardware Store.
  • While our Alaska Adventure was in 2007, we left our 5th wheels in Tok at Sourdough Campground where we had stayed and drove over the Top of the World to Dawson City. Nice trip in just the truck and stayed in B&B in Dawson City for a few days to see the sights. I would recommend that travel plan vs pulling from Whitehorse to Dawson and then to Tok.

  • Sure you can drive the Top of the World Highway from Tok and very easily with your truck..and yes, big rigs/buses use this road, too.

However, if you have the time another suggestion is go from Whitehorse to Dawson City with your 5th wheel. It's all paved and an easy scenic drive - no hills to speak of. Then you'd be able to spend more time in Dawson. There's plenty to do there. You would then have to backtrack to Whitehorse if you didn't want to take your 5th wheel across the river on the ferry (easy) and drive the Top of the World.

Have fun planning your return trip!
