266w from NV95 and CA168 to Big Pine CA

We are traveling from Saint George UT to Bishop, CA for Mule Days in 3 weeks and wonder if 266 and 168W can be traveled with a 39' fiver with F350. Looks like a small road on the map. Other option is north to Tonapah and west on 6. We like scenic roads but not if we cannot make the pulls. Being from PA, these mountains are new to us. Thanks for any info

  • There are 2 curvy portions. One is near Nevada, crossing Gilbert Pass. Then it crosses the Deep Springs basin. Then it climbs a bit to the White Mtn Rd turn off, and then follows a stream to the US395.

This is the curvy part that dips as it crosses the dry creek bed. I don't recall a single lane section, but it probably is on one of the crossings. The dips are not signed, but a single lane section will be. If you watch your speed and keep your eyes on the road, you shouldn't have problems.

Just imagine driving to some farm around Emery.

It's indicative of the light traffic on this road that they only have diamond warning signs, not stop signs and/or signals. There's an earlier sign "road narrows watch for opposing traffic".
  • When I drove it (in a car), the best part was the side trip up to the bristle cone pines. That was a rather typical paved forest service road up a mountain.
  • Yes it is doable however it probably will not be enjoyable. 266 is not to bad 168 is very steep narrow and windy, one spot even pinches down to a single lane. If you have Google earth you may want to take a look at it.
  • I'm sure locals with horse trailers drive 168 all the time. The climb from the Nevada side is minor, with a longer drop to the low valley in California. But the main problem with this road is that is follows a dry wash, and repeatedly crosses the wash - without bridges or culverts. The result is a curvy roller coaster ride - doable but you'll have to watch your speed.
  • Most all roads in Nevada are two lane highways with the exception of the interstates. These you are looking at are all 2 lanes (95 has some 4-lane portions) but typically kept in good condition by the state. I've been on that route once, about 20 years ago and it was a good road, but curvy and steep in a few places. Have to go over the White mountains at a pretty high elevation but if your 350 is the diesel, you shouldn't have any problems...I don't think I would do it with the V10 normal aspirated engine.

Going on up to Hwy 6 is an easier drive, longer and pretty boring.
