My husband and I (mid 40's) are planning a month long camping trip to the north eastern part of US. This will be our first trip to the north east and we will be pulling a pop up camper and are looking for suggestions on places to stay and best route to take. We are looking to stay 3 to 4 days in each place and not drive more than 4 hours between places but can be flexible. We do need power at each site and we are more interested in outdoor activities, nature, wine tours and maybe a stop at a casino. We are coming from southeast VA and have done some research and this is what we have so far. Assateague SP Eastern shore MD4th of July Fireworks NYC (where would be a good place to stay and take train into city)Head up coast to Maine ending at Acadia NP (suggestions on where to stay along the way)White Mtns - Kancamagus HwyWatkins Glen/finger lakes (can we do day trip to Niagra Falls from here or should we plan a few days there on Canada side?)End up in the PoconosThoughts on this trip and any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I take it you are not into history, as being from Williamsburg you've probably had your fill, so there is no need to go to Boston, other than the sea food, which you can get any where along the coast. Not that there isn't anything else to do in Boston, but those are the 2 that draw most folks. Acadia NP is an awesome place, with some great hikes, Bar Harbor, for food & shopping, we stayed 3 days in Blackwoods CG, but there are no hookups, I'm sure others will chime in here as there are private CG's around the area with FHU's. The White Mtns are another gorgeous area with lots to see & do, & some serious hikes if your into that. The Auto Road up Mnt Washington is an experience in it's self. As far as a day trip to The Falls, I don't know what you want to see or do there, but it's 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive each way, so only you can say if it's doable.

Thanks for the reply bukhrn. We are interested in history but have been to Boston before. We want to do and see things on this trip that we haven't done before (camping for a month being one of them). Looking for less tourist places and more scenic places. We threw nyc in just because we thought it would be a good place for fireworks as we will be around there on the 4th but we are open to any suggestions.

Thanks!!!To make the trip to Niagara worthwhile you really do need to cross into Canada (take passports!).Due to the freak of nature that created the Falls, the view really is a lot better from the Canadian side.While you are there you need to take the "Maid of the Mist" boat tour and take the ride down behind the Falls themselves (oil-skins provided!)Then you could take the Spanish cable car ride across the river over the Whirlpool rapids a little bit downriver from the Falls. Both ends of the ride are in Canada.If you are adventurous (and/or need to cool off on a hot day!) you could take the jet-boat ride through the Whirlpool rapids, it runs from a beautiful little village called Niagara-on-the-Lake - worth a visit in itself.While at the Falls themselves you do need to turn your back on the towering blocks of hotels that have been built in the last 20-30 years that (IMHO) have destroyed what used to be a beautiful park location.You need to be there during an evening as the Falls are lit up with multi-colored lasers/floodlights after dark.Right on the brink of the Falls is a restaurant called Table Rock. Reservations are required, ask for a window seat.You will not do the round trip plus do justice to the Falls in one day. You really need to make it at least a two day trip.Edit: Forgot to mention the highlight of one of my Niagara trips - the helicopter ride over the Falls.They leave from just downriver (near the Butterfly Conservatory) and the flight lasts about 20 minutes. It's amazing how much water there is in that area!!Cost around $75 maybe 10 years ago, probably double that by now,

Do a Google search for `______ tourism' and put the city, state or area in the blank and read what the experts state are the things to do in their respective areas.Be sure to take the bus tour of Boston. Do NOT try to drive around Boston to see the sights by yourselves unless you are a masochist for driving in crowded small spaces.

"less tourist and more scenic places" in Maine, you may want to add the Schoodic section of Acadia and Mt Katahdin to your list. Both places are not nearly as busy as Acadia in and around Bar Harbor. Katahdin of course has some Appalachian Trail you could scratch off your bucket list.Be sure to swim in the river along the Kancamangus!

In the Finger Lakes Region there is the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. You can do them from Watkins Glen State Park and Taughannock Falls State Park.

The KOA in Newburgh NY is near the Beacon NY Train Station which is about an hour ride into the city. They also have a tour bus that will take you into the city.
Most campgrounds may already be booked already for July 4th weekend.

Ditto on Oceanside KOA. As far as the Kanc goes, all the CGs along the highway are without hookups. You will also need a NPS pas in both the White Mountains NF and the Acadia NP. And a gentle reminder -New England is a relatively small place with millions of visitors in July. It might be best to begin reserving sites now...

Coming up from Williamsburg on rte 13. Charrystone & Toms Cove. Stayed at both and spent a day at the beach. Kiptopeke SP is also supposed to be great down by the Cheasapeke Bridge. We never stayed at Assastegue but its on the list. In NJ is Liberty CG supposedly the closest to NYC. Ive heard that its nothing more than a parking lot but its the closest to NYC. Going North we layed over at Newburgh KOA which states that it runs NYC trips I would look into that andits about an hour north of NYC or so. Further North we had a great week at Lake George Escape RV resort. Tubing on the river, shuttle to downtown, fireworks, lots to see and do, or not...For Boston there is a CG that we are going to for the 3rd time Boston Minuteman. Small but in the woods, FHU nice owners with a train nearby to zip into Boston. In New Hampshire we spent a week at Danforth Bay camping resort on Lake Ossippee. From there we drove all over the White Mountains. Drive up Mt Washington, Zipline tours, hiking, kayaking. If you go there Yankee BBQ was amazing. In Maine we stayed on an oceanfront site at Bar Harbor Oceanfront KOA and did the whole island plus biked in Acadia National Park. If you go there on the bridge going into Mt Desert Island (Bar Harbor), there is only one road, stop and eat at Trents Lobster Pound. We each devoured a 2 lb sweetest lobster ever had. The cg does have its own lobster guy if you just want to stay in..On Long Island there are County Parks (look up Suffolk County Parks) plus Hither Hills SP in Montauk,which is on the ocean. Cape Cod Camping Resort was fun. Just north of Falmouth you can drive the whole Cape. We would also go into Woods Hole, take a science boat tour. Eat at Schuckers for the best lobster roll. Waterfront dining on a crooked deck. We also jumped on the Martha Vineyard ferry for a day trip to the island. At the end of the Cape is PTown and they have Whale tours which was amazing and a bike trail. The converted the rail line into a bike trail and you can stop at different towns along the way and check them out. fun! Keep in mind that this is the busy RV time so plot your course and make reservations. The cgs fill up fast.

In Connecticut along the shore there is Hammonassette State Park, right on Long Island Sound. No hookups, but really nice park and neat small towns in the area.

Mystic Seaport - a bunch of campgrounds in the area (including Mystic KOA).

Inland a bit is Gillete Castle State Park. No campground there, but many nearby campgrounds (like Wolf's Den private campground with hookups - there is a Wolf's Den State Park campground, but it doesn't have hookups). If you could catch a show at Goodspeed Opera House while you are there you really would have a good time!

Lots of other places to go and things to do if you have the time!

If you do Niagara falls and then head to the Poconos 2 options on the way. Pa elk herd in St Mary's or Benezette-very basic campground there with hook ups. We watched elk grazing while we ate dinner. Other option is Pa grand canyon in Wellsboro.

Vermont state parks do not have hookups, unfortunately for you. If you can manage without electricity for a night or two, there are some lovely ones around. The small campground at Smuggler's Notch state park would be a good starting point for the notch itself (a very scenic and unusual road—probably not ideal for towing your popup over, though probably possible), several hiking opportunities, and the Stowe area.

The Fairbanks Museum in St Johnsbury, VT is a rather fascinating old museum, mostly natural history (with a sort of victorian approach—so taxidermy specimens, etc.) but with a good helping of assorted other things thrown together apparently at random. The pictures made from preserved insects are somewhat well-known. A few blocks away is the Athenaeum (i.e. public library) which has a marvelous little art gallery.

The city of Burlington runs North Beach park/campground (with hookups), a very nice sandy beach on Lake Champlain, and right on the bike trail that goes up to South Hero island. From there, it's quite reasonable to get to US 2 and bike across the causeway to sandbar state park. It's a decently long bike trip round trip, but pretty flat, at least by New England standards.

Letchworth State Park in New York, maybe 50 or so miles south of Rochester, is well worth a visit (as is Watkin's Glen).

If you're going between northernish Vermont and the finger lakes area, consider crossing at the crown point bridge, and taking 9N south in New York to 8 to 365—a very pretty scenic (but at times mountainous) drive.

You might look at Twin Mountain, NH. You can do Crawford Notch, North Conway, and the Mt Washington Cog Railway from a base around there. We, with the grandson, will be there for about three days in late July on the way to the Bay of Fundy.
