At Winslow, AZ, right off the Interstate (40), you can drive into town and stand on the corner ( this is a reference to the Eagles song.) The town has the Standin on the Corner intersection immortalized with mural, 66 sign on the pavement, etc. Fun gift shop.
Near there is the Homolovi State Park which has electric hookups, interesting ruins and hikes. Very close to the Interstate at Winslow. Makes a good overnight.
I enjoyed seeing the Petrified Forest NP and Painted Desert Inn, old 66 site and again, easy on & off the highway. Brought back childhood road trip memories.
Shamrock, TX has some great old storefronts that take you into a time warp, if you traveled this area on family trips as a kid. The U-Drop Inn gas station is fun, and around the corner is one of those stone Texas shaped signs that once were at road entrances to the state. Good for photo op. (I was born in big D, so have lots of old black & white photos of us at those signs.)
