Hi,
There is a great deal to see in the area.
Jasper is 179 miles from Banff (which I would give a miss) to Jasper. After Jasper, the next logical stop is Kamloops which is 274 miles. That means missing Golden, Revelstoke and Sicamous. Or you may back track to Lake Louise and proceed west.
I love the scenery from Lake Louise to Sicamous.
That 274 miles from Jasper to Kamloops is 4 hours and 44 minutes assuming you can drive the speed limit (I don't choose to do so, as I'm in no rush).
I find Jasper a little less of a tourist trap than Banff.
I travel the area from the Crow's Nest pass to Peachland including Invermere and Radium Hot springs every July. I sometimes drive the route clockwise, and some times counter clockwise. My start and end points are in Saskatchewan. I am usually in that zone for two weeks.
Doing Banff to Jasper and then back to Lake Louise is nearly 7% of 5600 miles. I'd not call that a blip. The Icefields highway is one of the few toll roads and is posted if my memory serves at 50 MPH (80 kph). Drive time at the speed limit for the 144 miles is 3 hours and 7 minutes.

"Jasper is a long way north." Really? I would say it's a blip on the map of a 5600 mile journey. It really is something to experience the touristy, commercial hubbub of Banff then drive the Icefields Parkway to the sublime, relaxed atmosphere of Jasper.
