Alaska Highway - Haines Junction to Beaver Creek/border

The Alaska Highway is the ONLY year-round land highway to Alaska. 80 to 85 per cent of the traffic on the north Alaska Highway is U.S. traffic going to or from Alaska.

This would include travellers such as those in RVs (you), and transport trucks. Dozens of transport trucks roll by our place each day year-round on their way to Alaska.

Canada has invested about $1.5 billion on the entire Alaska Highway.
The US has contributed about $460 million.

Excerpt from the article
Highways and Public Works director of transportation engineering Paul Murchison said there is about $14 million worth of work left paving the Haines Road. The government also estimates $65 million in work paving from Haines Junction to Destruction Bay. On top of that there is between $60 and $120 million worth of work related to permafrost between Destruction Bay and the U.S. border, he said. That same section will cost $140 million to paved.
  • But the money isn't being spent now, because the US is not contributing. Two years ago the highway was in better shape than I've seen it in years & years. It is again deteriorating because the funding is not available to upgrade it.
  • glad someone spending money on this Hwy. 2 years ago we found the inside of our FW upside down and a stone took out our low water drain and we lost our on board water. On the plus side it helped with the dust problem for those behind us. Hubby fixed all in Haines and on we went.
  • Learn more about the Shakwak Project here

Note the links on the upper right of the page; the pdf brochure is interesting.

    From the funding linked page:

Since the Shakwak Agreement was signed in 1977, over 1.8 billion dollars have been spent upgrading and maintaining the Alaska Highway System (an international highway) in Canada.

U.S. and Alaskan governments have accounted for 22% of expenditures on the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway and Haines Road – US$399,554,041.

Yukon and Canada have accounted for 78% of the capital and maintenance cost – C$1,432,097,872.
  • Haines Highway - there's a bridge replacement project underway, I think the bridge was damaged last year.

And I think I saw a paving project sign on our daytrip there earlier this month. It is also interesting to note how quickly the recently new and improved paved areas are already breaking down.

  • More left to do on the Haines Highway? It was one of the best last year! BTW Just a mile or so south of Haines Junction is a rest area with a nice view. A nice stop even if you don't go further south.
  • Those two dollar amounts are impressive. Are the $1.5 billion (Canada) and $460 million (US) amounts after conversion of the individual expenditures to 2014 dollars?

You could build a lot of road for a million dollars in the early 1940s but that won't get you an intersection today. Just the Environmental Impact Statement (US term) for the intersection will cost that much today.

    Thanks for the info!
