No comparison from 30 years ago! To us, it was like any secondary highway in the lower 48. Yes, you'll encounter road construction and it may be a longer stretch than what you'll experience in the lower 48, but it's very doable. There are a few areas that have frost heaves and these are not repairable because of the constant permafrost conditions. The majority of these sections are marked and you can usually tell that they're coming up but the wavy look of the road. That's your clue to start driving slower. Think of them as speed bumps.
For our all-summer trip we had absolutely no repair issues with either our motorhome or the towed Jeep. We had no window damage or dings to the paint. When we saw an oncoming vehicle we'd slow way down and move as far as we could to the right side of the road, sometimes even stopping if it was safe to do so.
We also drove the Top of the World Highway which again, was no issue for us. However, don't drive it if it's rainy or has rained in the past couple days. Just sit tight for a day or two. You can't be in a rush for the whole Alaskan experience. Have a good one!
