Alcan Hwy

We drove the Alcan 30yrs ago we have heard it is much improved, we want to take another trip with our trailer but we want to know if anyone has driven the Alcan lately and if anybody can recommend tires for the trip?

  • No comparison from 30 years ago! To us, it was like any secondary highway in the lower 48. Yes, you'll encounter road construction and it may be a longer stretch than what you'll experience in the lower 48, but it's very doable. There are a few areas that have frost heaves and these are not repairable because of the constant permafrost conditions. The majority of these sections are marked and you can usually tell that they're coming up but the wavy look of the road. That's your clue to start driving slower. Think of them as speed bumps.

For our all-summer trip we had absolutely no repair issues with either our motorhome or the towed Jeep. We had no window damage or dings to the paint. When we saw an oncoming vehicle we'd slow way down and move as far as we could to the right side of the road, sometimes even stopping if it was safe to do so.

We also drove the Top of the World Highway which again, was no issue for us. However, don't drive it if it's rainy or has rained in the past couple days. Just sit tight for a day or two. You can't be in a rush for the whole Alaskan experience. Have a good one!
  • We just came down from our 6th trip in Sept. Paved all the way, but north of Whitehorse the frost heaves and road breakup can be bad in sections. We carry a spare and have used it once as the availability of specialized tires can widely vary. We were told a Michelin 295/80-22.5 would take 3-5 days to get in at Whitehorse with a significant rush premium attached. They changed our spare out in an hour and a half. Our problem was not the roads but a very bad previous alignment.
  • The Alcan no longer exists. It is the Alaska Highway. Can 1, Can 97, and Can 37. Highway this year was in good shape with some construction near Burwash. Of course that will be done and a new section will be worked on.
Good quality tires nothing fancy. Yes, if you have a flat replacements are available in larger cities on the highway. Road service is another question. Trailer tires (ST) need to be kept an eye on.
