Along bottom of Louisiana, Port Arthur to NOLA??

Hi all, anybody take state 82 from Port Arthur going east?? How is it?
We will then get on US 90 thru cajun country. Isn't there a great rv park (Betty's??) somewhere on that route??
Places to see, eat and stay along these routes?? Thanks!
  • I travel LA 82, yes it is 2 lane but take your time, getting on the ferry at Cameron, runs mostly daylight hours. Shuts down at 11 or midnight and starts up at 6 am. Bettys at Abbeville is nice but there is Rayne Civic Centre also! Lake Campground at Morgan City is also nice. Visit Houma but don't forget a side trip to Grand Isle, Lafourche and Terrebonne is the typical Cajun country!!! Bayou Sennette in Westwego is a great state park. Laissez le bon temp roulez!
  • Just made this trip last month from Betty's in Abbeville heading west. No problem driving 50-55 MPH on LA 82. Ferry at Cameron was really no problem. We dragged hitch due to my long overhang on Class C ever so slightly getting on - no problem getting off. Easy drive - - much better than driving I-10 in western LA IMHO.

LA 14 takes you east from Abbeville to pickup US 90 just before you get to New Iberia - - or continue on LA 14 to New Iberia and pickup LA 182, then south to Jeanerette. Stop at LaJeune's Bakery for some delicious baked goods (entrance is around the side, not in the front). LA 182 parallels US 90 and you can hop back on 90 anytime after Jeanerette or continue south to where LA 182 runs into US 90, then continue east to NO.

And YES, staying at Betty's is definitely an experience. We've stayed there 3 times over the years - - always enjoyed our stay - - Betty is a great hostess! Call for reservations. It's a small park and most always full.
  • A couple things to check.

    1) Ferry at Cameron - I don't know what their weight / length limit is - but my memory of the entrance / exit from the ferry was a sharp dip where my Chevy Venture van dragged bottom slightly.

    2) Drawbridge at Mementau River. Steep and a 7 ton limit if my memory is correct.

We attended a wedding in Grand Chenier back about 2000 - so conditions may have changed. I understand Hurricane Rita in 2005 hit the area very hard.

From Port Arthur to Cameron is travel through a high grass wetland. There are some side roads to the Gulf - but you can't see water from the road most of the time.

Cameron is a very busy for the size oil service town. Stop there for lunch - no other place to buy prepared food until you get to near Abbeville.

The drive farther east is through some great wetland forests. Duck hunting in winter is a big deal down there. Grand Chenier is a few stores and a few side streets with homes along the road.

As mentioned above - it is all two lane with no shoulders. Don't expect to make the trip averaging above 30-35 mph.
  • 82 is a 2 lane state road with no shoulders. You can zoom in on the road on google maps earth view. No shoulders is tricky if you need to pull over for something. We have taken US90 from NO to I-10 and it is fine. Betty's is in Abbeville LA south of Lafayette. Never stayed there but looks like a neat place. Be sure to read the reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com - the campground itself didn't get good reviews. The owner and atmosphere is what makes it. Don't miss the Tabasco factory near New Iberia at Avery Island. Visit Houma Louisiana and take a swamp tour. http://www.houmatravel.com/
