- slickest1ExplorerWe have not travelled the 199, but did take the 299 last spring. I would not recommend it. It is up and down and long and winding. There are some narrow sharp corners, and rocks on the road. It was interesting but I will never do it again.
- creetchExplorer299 has a massive construction project going on to straighten some of the curves. They are working at evening and night, but call for 45 minutes delays possible.
- dicknellenExplorer IIWe live about 62 miles east of Reno in Fallon so subtract 60 miles from my info. Good route always stay over night in Yreka at Waiiaka Trailer Haven at the Fairgrounds exit. D1ck

Sorry, thought you were asking on a more immediate journey. 199 is a easier drive, however it depends on where you are going. If your destination is the Oregon Coast then 199 is the way to go. I would only take 299 for Eureka area.

We also have a trip planned from Reno and over to and up the Oregon Coast.
What is 299 over to McKinnleyville like? If I have got the description correctly, the road has a lot of twists and turns? Is it much worse than 199 (which we have done)? We were hoping to gt from Reno to the coast in one day but looks like a stretch.
Don't mind going up Grants Pass but it seems like you'd lose time in doubling back down in Ca. before heading north again? Not to mention more fuel? IIRC, Grants Pass is something like 7%? I remember 199 being a bit of a wild downhill ride also with lots of twists and turns.
I would avoid 299 at this time. Lots of Fire equipment on the move. Really smoky. 199 is your best bet.
Thank you! We'll be there in the last couple of weeks of Sept. Will still be in the forest fire season and who knows a month from now, but for the record what is the drive on 199 like? - Marv_HoagExplorer

395 to Susanville, 44/89 to Mt Shasta,I5 to Medford, to Crescent City, to Brookings. Only grade will be on I5.
This the best way......take the cut off just past Jedidiah Smith State Park on 199 and save a few miles to Brookings. Only big grade will be the Siskiyou Summit in Oregon and it is not bad at all! - Marv_HoagExplorerForget the Hwy 20 recommendation. Going to close due to wildfire near Clear Lake.
